As a seasoned movie enthusiast with a penchant for international cinema and a particular fondness for the Berlin Film Festival, I must say, this latest development is music to my ears! The addition of not one but two new screening venues and hubs promises to breathe fresh life into the heart of Potsdamer Platz.
For its 75th anniversary in February, the Berlin Film Festival will introduce a fresh movie theater and central point.
On Tuesday, there was an announcement about the festival making some exciting changes to its venue at Potsdamer Platz. These alterations include the installation of two new attractions: the Stage Bluemax Theater and the Berlinale Hub75.
Situated on Marlene-Dietrich-Platz, the Stage Bluemax Theater is set to be a fresh venue for premier screenings, accommodating up to 500 guests. It will be hosting Berlinale’s new Perspectives competition for debut features, in addition to numerous other premiere screenings throughout the festival.
At the Marlene-Dietrich-Platz, Hub75 is going to be constructed temporarily as a vibrant venue for various talks and public events. This space will not only cater to the general audience but also function as a socializing ground for professionals in the industry.
The statement indicates that these changes were implemented following the shutdown of significant screens in the vicinity and a decrease in seating capacity at various sites, which led to approximately 150,000 screening seats being eliminated. Rather than transferring the festival to different locations within Berlin, the Berlinale opted to include additional venues around Potsdamer Platz to ensure the event remained nearby.
As the new festival director, I’m eagerly looking forward to the upcoming Berlinale. Ever since the closure and renovation of some iconic cinemas in 2022, our city center at Potsdamer Platz has felt a bit less vibrant. However, this is just a temporary setback. The new venues we’re introducing are part of our long-term vision to rejuvenate the festival heart, making it more accessible and filled with energy once again. We aim to bring back the lively atmosphere that made this central hub so special.
The Berlin Film Festival will run from Feb. 13 to 23.
