As a lifelong gamer and a passionate enthusiast of the science fiction genre, I can’t help but feel a mix of disappointment and frustration upon hearing about the shutdown of Humanoid Origin Studio. Having grown up playing games like Mass Effect and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, I was eagerly anticipating their next project set in a new science-fiction universe.
In 2021, Casey Hudson, who previously led BioWare as CEO and directed the original Mass Effect trilogy and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, unveiled Humanoid Origin studio. Shortly after, Humanoid Origin team revealed they were developing a top-tier game within a sci-fi universe. Sadly, recent news indicates that they won’t be able to complete this project.
The studio published a LinkedIn post announcing the shutdown of Humanoid Origin. The decision is explained as being a result of insufficient funds to enable further functioning.
Today, I’m disheartened to share some disappointing news with our team: Humanoid Origin is closing. Despite our best attempts to safeguard the studio from the larger industry hurdles, an unforeseen gap in financial support has made it impossible for us to keep the studio running.
It’s deeply disappointing that we won’t finish crafting our fresh sci-fi world. Right now, though, our priority lies with our team members, and we’re dedicated to helping them find their footing in new jobs.
During our shared journey, the team made remarkable strides, proving that one can accomplish extraordinary feats in an atmosphere brimming with joy and innovation. We express our gratitude for their skills, bravery, and camaraderie.
As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but notice the tough times faced by some studios during 2023 and 2024, including the unfortunate shutdown of one that developed a game I loved – Helldivers 2. Recently, the developers have openly expressed their concerns about the challenging state of our cherished gaming industry. However, according to the leader of the team behind The Witcher, these hardships stem from an overabundance of games in the market and are a ripple effect of the pandemic.
