Schwartz & Sandy’s Is Scandoval’s Latest Casualty

As a seasoned movie buff with a penchant for reality TV dramas and a knack for observing the intricacies of human relationships, I can’t help but feel a pang of sympathy for Tom Schwartz and Tom Sandoval as they bid farewell to Schwartz and Sandy’s. The duo, who have been no strangers to turbulent times on Bravo’s Vanderpump Rules, have now faced the harsh realities of a challenging post-COVID dining climate and the lingering effects of their personal scandal – Scandoval.

Overcoming a major nationwide scandal is no easy task, especially considering the challenging post-COVID dining environment. However, if you didn’t stake your family’s $250,000 retirement fund on the business, things should eventually improve – though it seems that wasn’t the case for Schwartz and Sandy’s. This bar and restaurant, founded by the Vanderpump Rules stars Tom Schwartz and Tom Sandoval, has announced its closure by the end of the year. The COVID pandemic and the aftermath of their scandal, known as Scandoval, were cited as contributing factors to the bar’s failure. “Making the decision to close was one of the hardest we’ve ever had to make,” Schwartz shared with People. “We wrestled with it for a long time because we genuinely believe the bar still has potential. Unfortunately, the current business climate is tough, and recovering from the negativity post-scandal wasn’t easy. The reduced profit margins post-COVID made it even more difficult to bounce back. There’s little room for error in the restaurant/bar industry.” Schwartz and Sandy’s opened in November 2022 with support from Lisa Vanderpump and the success of their first bar, TomTom.

Despite Scandoval being a significant factor in the demise of Schwartz and Sandy’s business, it wasn’t the sole casualty involving them. In fact, it severely strained Katie Maloney and Schwartz’s marriage, as expressed by Maloney on the show, “All our marital problems, arguments, and everything we were going through has now been embodied. This bar was like the other woman in our marriage, and I find myself standing inside of her now.” The strain nearly led to their separation, and Maloney asked Schwartz, “Was it worth it?” Now, at least, Maloney has her answer.

According to their Instagram post, the bar will be shutting down by the end of December. However, before it does, they’re planning a Taylor Swift-themed party to celebrate her birthday, even though she might be more of an Ariana Grande fan.
