As a seasoned gamer who has journeyed through countless virtual worlds, I can’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia as I read about the impending shutdown of the Xbox Avatar Editor. It was a feature that brought a unique touch to my gaming persona, allowing me to express myself in ways beyond the usual gamer tags and handles.
During the Xbox One period, Microsoft launched the Xbox Avatar Editor, and they’ve recently announced that it will be closing on January 9, 2025. Fortunately, your Xbox 360 Avatars are here to stay.
Microsoft has shared that starting next year, onwards from January 9th, the Xbox Avatar Editor will no longer function and users won’t be able to make any changes or access it. However, if you’ve made any purchases for your avatar within the last year (since November 1, 2023), you’ll receive an automatic refund for those specific buys. If you currently use your avatar as your Xbox Gamerpic, you can still do so, but will be unable to update it through the Xbox Avatar Editor after January 9th.
The reason Microsoft gave for the shutdown was that there was low user interaction, along with their focus moving towards providing different gaming experiences for users.
It’s great to hear that the Xbox 360 Avatars, now officially known as Xbox Original Avatars, will remain accessible. These digital characters made their debut in 2008 for the Xbox 360 and have since been available on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. They are primarily used in Xbox Live Arcade games like 1 vs. 100, A Kingdom for Keflings, or Doritos Crash Course. Additionally, they can serve as Gamerpics and be customized using the Xbox Original Avatars app on consoles and PC.
Although Xbox 360 Avatars gained some prominence thanks to their resemblance to Nintendo’s Miis, the revamped avatars introduced for Xbox One didn’t seem to capture the same level of appeal and have often been overlooked. However, Microsoft has clarified on its support page that even though Xbox Avatars will no longer be available, players can still customize their Xbox experience in alternative ways, such as with personalized dynamic backgrounds, custom Gamerpics, and various other options.
