As I gaze upon the vibrant pixels of Sonic 3‘s latest trailer, my heart swells with nostalgia. You see, dear reader, I was but a wee lad when Shadow the Hedgehog graced our PlayStation consoles back in ’05. The sight of that sleek, menacing figure, his silhouette against the fiery horizon, sent shivers down my spine and filled me with a sense of rebellious excitement.
Alright, mate! Guess what? A fresh trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has been released, and it looks like ol’ Shadow will be brandishing his signature gear in the game!
At the age of eight, I experienced the release of Shadow the Hedgehog on PS2. It was an exhilarating moment for me: Sonic, but reimagined as a darker, black-and-red character with a villainous twist, and armed with guns to take down anyone at will. By the way, he even uttered phrases like “darn!” (Note: I’ve replaced “damn!” with “darn!”, which is considered less offensive.)
After that point, SEGA has adapted a new strategy when it comes to the character. In the words of Sonic’s head, Takashi Iizuka, “If there’s no requirement for Shadow to wield a firearm, he likely won’t.
Don’t worry, Shadow enthusiasts! In keeping with what made the anti-hero endearing in the original series, Sonic 3 is set to preserve those elements. Not only will he be riding his motorbike, but you can expect to see his famous revolver as well.
Shadow is packing heat in Sonic 3’s trailer
In the latest trailer for the third installment, there’s a lot to decipher. It seems ambiguous whether Sonic will consult Dr. Robotnik prior to meeting his grandfather Gerald, and Shadow appears eager for retribution against humanity, hinting at an incident possibly involving Maria.
It’s likely that Sonic and Shadow will engage in a battle, initially resisting cooperation – but eventually, they’ll be forced to work together. At some point during their struggle, Shadow might resort to using his gun.

“One fan said after they gave Shadow his group, ‘Let’s go.’ Another posted, ‘Paramount is really making things sizzle with Shadow having a firearm.’ A third excitedly wrote, ‘Shadow has a bike and a gun? They pulled it off! They actually did it!’ The fourth added, ‘Shadow armed with a weapon, the moon partially destroyed – they truly did justice to Shadow.’
Jeff Fowler, the movie’s director (who had previously contributed to animating Shadow for the 2005 game) shared with Entertainment Weekly that he took great care to maintain the essence of the character as loved by fans, while also meeting their expectations.
He emphasized that they were mindful of the current times and the appropriate use of such imagery in a family-oriented movie. He believes they achieved an excellent outcome, and viewers will undoubtedly admire Shadow and Maria. A tremendous amount of attention and affection was invested in portraying Shadow’s tale and creating the best film adaptation of this character possible.
Fowler hinted that the conclusion of Sonic 3 might introduce a fresh character, and I’ve got a pretty good idea about who that could be.
