France’s Srab Films to Co-Produce Colombian Family Drama ‘Name and Surname,’ Part of Ventana Sur’s Proyecta Lineup (EXCLUSIVE)

As a seasoned film enthusiast with a penchant for uncovering hidden gems from around the globe, I find myself genuinely intrigued by “Name and Surname.” The story of Fer, a 16-year-old navigating through the stark contrasts of his fractured home and upper-class school life, seems to echo the experiences of many young individuals struggling to find their place in society.

Film production company Srab Films is set to collaborate with Duván Duque Vargas, a Colombian filmmaker, on “Name and Surname,” an upcoming dramatic feature that will be produced by both Evidencia Films and Continente Pictures.

In the movie, 16-year-old Fer is desperate to leave his troubled home, which seems inferior compared to those of his wealthy schoolmates. Despite his father’s promise to provide him with a portion of his mother’s inheritance, Fer’s eagerness leads him to resort to various schemes to make money quickly. His dishonesty with friends and the strain he places on his father’s questionable loan business can’t last forever.

Following extensive private investigations into ‘Name and Surname’s’ form, it’s thrilling that Ventana Sur will be the movie’s initial international platform. This is a significant stride towards materializing this project and sharing it globally,” Duque shares with EbMaster.

In one aspect, it seems logical because I think there’s an intriguing quality about this aimless teen, moving between his father’s troubled world as a street loan shark and the upper-class circles of his school friends, that could strike a powerful chord in Latin America. However, it’s also rewarding to network with fellow filmmakers in Montevideo, which now hosts Ventana Sur and stands as a testament to our industry’s fortitude and adaptability, even during tough times.

Alongside his regular partners Franco Lolli and Capucine Mahé, Duque will also take on the role of producer. This dynamic duo is rapidly gaining recognition in Colombia’s independent film scene. They have collaborated with Duque before, most notably on his award-winning short “Todo Incluido” and Lolli’s acclaimed works like “Litigante,” which won the Colombian Academy Macondo award, and “Gente de bien,” which was screened at Cannes.

Under the name ‘Name and Surname,’ we’re working on our third project with Duván, following two exceptional short films. As producers, it’s thrilling to be embarking on this journey together and supporting him in his directorial debut. We firmly believe that Duván has a unique story to share, and we’re confident that his creativity, commitment, and hard work will result in a deeply moving and cinematic portrayal of adolescence in our contemporary Latin-American societies, particularly for those who have experienced a fractured family life.

As a project, “Name and Surname” has taken part in various events such as France’s BAL-LAB Biarritz Amérique Latine Festival, The Writing Residency in Mallorca, Spain’s The Write Retreat, and the Ópera de Leyva Lab in Colombia. During these participations, it won the Fósil Prize. Additionally, it has received financial support from Proimágenes in Colombia.

During this year’s Ventana Sur in Montevideo, the film’s creators aim to finalize an agreement with another co-producer and negotiate with potential sales representatives, distribution companies, television networks, and streaming platforms.
