As a dedicated movie enthusiast with a soft spot for dark comedies and gripping dramas, I can’t help but feel a thrill of anticipation upon hearing about “Half Man.” Richard Gadd, whose witty and poignant work in “Baby Reindeer” left an indelible mark on me, is now set to star alongside the versatile Jamie Bell. The fact that they will be playing estranged brothers adds a layer of intrigue that has me hooked.
Richard Gadd and Jamie Bell will appear in “Half Man,” an upcoming six-part dramatic series, which will be jointly produced by HBO and the BBC.
Originally titled “Lions,” the series is now known as “Half Man.” This show is penned, directed, and overseen by Gadd, the Emmy-winning actor behind Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer.” Before the spring debut of “Baby Reindeer” on Netflix, BBC had already commissioned “Lions,” produced by Mam Tor Prods., a division of Banijay UK. The show gained significant popularity and catapulted Gadd to A-list status following its successful premiere on Netflix.
In June, HBO came on board as a collaborative producer for the project. At that point, Gadd was credited as the creator, scriptwriter, and executive producer of the “Lions” series; however, there was no mention of him being cast in it at the time.
The title has been changed to “Half Man,” and it’s confirmed that Gadd will be part of the cast. In this series, set to start filming in 2025 in Scotland, Gadd and Bell (known for “All of Us Strangers” and “Rocket Man”) are portraying estranged brothers Ruben and Niall.
The main storyline goes like this: “At Niall’s wedding, his supposed long-lost brother Ruben makes an appearance, sparking a chain reaction of violence that takes us on a journey through their lives. This sprawling series, set over nearly four decades from the 1980s to the present day, delves into the ups and downs of their relationship, starting with their first encounter as teenagers and ending with their estrangement as adults. It offers a glimpse into the good, bad, terrible, humorous, contentious, and testing times they experienced together. The narrative aims to mirror the vibrant dynamism of a city undergoing change, reflecting the broader shifts in society, and seeks to explore a profound question: What truly defines manhood?
In addition to Gadd, the executive producers for this project are Tally Garner and Morven Reid from Mam Tor Productions (a Banjilay UK company), Gaynor Holmes from the BBC, and Gavin Smith from BBC Scotland. Alexandra Brodski (“Somewhere Boy,” “Rivals”) and Eshref Reybrouck (“Ferry: The Series,” “Cheyenne & Lola”) will be directing, while Wendy Griffin (“Limbo,” “The Lost King”) is the producer. This series will be filmed in Scotland.
The series titled ‘Half Man’ was produced by Mam Tor Productions. It airs on HBO, BBC iPlayer, BBC One, and BBC Scotland. For international broadcasting, excluding the U.K., Ireland, and United States, Banijay Rights takes care of distribution. Screen Scotland is providing support for its production.
Gadd is represented by United Talent Agency, Markham, Froggatt and Irwin, and Individual Artist Management; while Bell is represented by Creative Artists Agency, 3 Artists Entertainment, and Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern.
