As a film enthusiast and someone who has seen my fair share of movies, I must say that the success of “Her Story” is a breath of fresh air in the Chinese cinema scene. It’s heartening to see a comedy-drama with a female perspective not only doing well but outperforming big-budget action films like “Gladiator II”. The story of two women navigating life’s challenges resonates deeply, and I can’t help but feel a sense of solidarity as I watch them face their trials.
Over the weekend of its debut, the comedy-drama movie “Her Story,” predominantly focusing on women’s viewpoints, became the highest-grossing film in mainland China. Meanwhile, the sequel to “Gladiator,” titled “Gladiator II,” premiered during the same time and finished in fourth place.
According to Artisan Gateway’s data, “Her Story” generated approximately RMB125 million ($17.5 million) from Friday through Sunday at the box office. With preview screenings included, its total earnings amount to $21.7 million. This impressive figure positions it as one of the most successful debuts in this relatively sluggish autumn movie season.
2021’s “B For Busy” movie is helmed by Shao Yihui. The narrative swiftly unfolds around two central characters: a single mom who has recently lost her job, and a seemingly troubled neighbor. As their friendship blossoms, they encounter several relationship hurdles, such as an abusive former spouse and fresh romantic prospects.
On the weekend, I watched the Japanese animated series “Crayon Shinchan: Our Dinosaur Story” that debuted, and it managed to secure the second spot at the box office with a revenue of $8.8 million in just two days!
In the third spot, we find the movie “To Gather Around,” also known as “Brave New World.” Over two weekends, it raked in $5.7 million, adding up to a total of $21.7 million. Directed by Liu Xunximo and featuring Deng Chao and Deng Jiajia, the film narrates the story of an employee at an internet company who becomes embroiled in a workplace disagreement. He teams up with others to assert his rights, but finds himself entangled in even greater complications.
In its initial three-day run in China, “Gladiator II” earned approximately RMB22.1 million ($3.1 million). This revenue figure signifies a return to the challenges often faced by Hollywood films in China following the success of a couple of visually effects-heavy movies, specifically “Alien: Romulus” and “Venom: The Last Dance,” which appeared to defy the usual trend.
In a recent re-release, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1” ranked among the top five films at the Chinese box office, earning approximately $2.2 million. IMAX reported that around 30% of this total, or about $650,000, was generated from IMAX screens.
The recent influx of fresh movies significantly boosted the nation’s weekend cinema earnings to $44.3 million, pushing the annual cumulative revenue to $5.62 billion. However, this figure is still 21% lower compared to the same period in 2023.
