‘Tumbbad,’ ‘Ship of Theseus’ Cinematographer Pankaj Kumar Makes Feature Directorial Debut With Film Bazaar-Selected Tribal Epic ‘Konyak’ (EXCLUSIVE)

As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for films that delve deep into the heart of diverse cultures and narratives, I find myself captivated by the upcoming project “Konyak”. Indian cinematographer Pankaj Kumar‘s directorial debut promises an immersive tribal action drama that echoes the raw energy of films like ‘Fury Road’ and ‘Apocalypto’.

Indian filmmaker Pankaj Kumar (“Tumbbad,” “Ship of Theseus”), known for his cinematography work, is poised to make his first directorial feature film titled “Konyak.” This tribal action drama unfolds in the northeastern parts of India. The movie was chosen for the NFDC Screenwriters Lab 2024, which is a part of the Film Bazaar. Production will be handled by Jiboom Studios, a new company established by Kumar himself.

Uddhav Ghosh’s movie tells the tale of Thungpang, a young warrior, who is driven by prophetic dreams to safeguard his tribe amidst a lethal clash between rival headhunting communities. The narrative delves into ideas of deception and loyalty as he encounters his once-friend-turned-foe, Sangba.

The project, originating from Ghosh’s journeys across Nagaland, is planned to be filmed in Konyak Naga and Hindi languages. This project will be overseen by Kumar, known for his work on movies like “Brahmastra Part One: Shiva” and “Talvar.” Notably, he will both direct and produce this film under his banner dedicated to theatrical narratives. Aside from this, Kumar has been engaged in post-production for “Khauff,” a horror series directed by him for Prime Video. Previously, he was involved in shooting Raj & DK’s Prime Video series “Farzi” and Netflix series “Guns & Gulaabs.

Ghosh expressed: “Our goal was consistently evident – to produce an action-packed masterpiece with a gritty, unvarnished feel, rooted in genuine authenticity, taking inspiration from movies such as ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ and ‘Apocalypto.’ With Pankaj Kumar joining us as director, his visual prowess elevates this film into the grand cinematic spectacle it merits. Our enthusiasm mirrors, as we construct a narrative that transcends mere action, delving into themes of identity and resilience found in everyday life.

Kumar stated, “Our aim for ‘Konyak’ is to develop an immersive, raw production, a film that truly comes alive on the big screen. Each frame should convey tales of resilience and heritage. As a director with a cinematography background, this project allows me to merge all these aspects. Working alongside Uddhav on this is thrilling; we’re transforming his captivating story into a visually stunning masterpiece that reflects its environment as much as it embodies adventure.

The script editor, Claire Dobbin, who oversaw the project, characterizes it as “far more than just an action film.” Instead, she sees it as “a gripping tale of deception, valor, and tenacity that spotlights the remarkable, albeit lesser-known, Konyak community – a group that will not easily be forgotten.

Martin Rabarts, leader of IFFR Pro at International Film Festival Rotterdam and former lab mentor, observes: “Similar to numerous thoughtful filmmakers across regions that were once colonized, Uddhav Ghosh is delving into the often-overlooked narratives of indigenous First Nations people. In partnership with them, he’s aiding in uncovering intricate and complex histories, including their resistance against the British empire, deep emotional ties to land and place that unite them through love, war, blood, and spirit.

From November 20th to 24th, Film Bazaar serves as the project market segment during the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), which takes place from November 20th to 28th, right here in beautiful Goa.
