As a fan, I can’t help but feel a tinge of melancholy with Pamela Hayden‘s decision to retire from “The Simpsons.” Her portrayal of Milhouse has been nothing short of iconic and her journey from school bully Jimbo Jones to Chief Wiggum’s wife Sarah is truly inspiring.
For Pamela Hayden, things are wrapping up nicely. The actress who’s lent her voice to Bart’s best friend on “The Simpsons” for 35 years, is retiring following Sunday night’s episode titled “Treehouse of Horror Presents: Simpsons Wicked This Way Comes.” However, Hayden expressed no remorse about departing from the long-running series.
Hayden shared with EbMaster, ‘How many performers can claim they’ve been part of a series uninterrupted for 35 years?’ Such longevity is impressive! However, I felt compelled to shift my focus towards other artistic pursuits I have, such as filmmaking. It was a difficult choice, but I believe it was the correct one.
Due to the extended period it takes for animation projects like “The Simpsons” to transition from idea to broadcast, Hayden’s departure has been planned well in advance. Known for voicing characters such as Jimbo Jones the school bully, Rod Flanders, Sarah Wiggum, and Lisa’s friend Janey Powell, Hayden shared that the show has been gracious in facilitating her retirement plans, even offering a farewell celebration in her honor.
Hayden commented, “This project is unlike anything I’ve tackled before,” having lent his voice to shows like “Hey Arnold”, “Pinky and the Brain”, “The New Batman Adventures” and “Recess.” He described it as a unique opportunity on an extraordinary series. As an actor, he’s accustomed to taking chances, which reflects his nature. He’s not one for playing it safe. Plus, there were other projects he wanted to explore. So, he decided to give it a try and see what resonates.
Her documentary titled “Jailhouse to Milhouse” by Hayden, delves into her challenging childhood experiences. This film has made its way through various film festivals, and she expressed her hope that it would instill optimism in those who may have faced similar hardships, stating, “I aim to inspire those who might have slipped through the cracks, to keep holding onto hope.” She shares candidly about her life, mentioning that there were years filled with tears when she was younger. When engaging with at-risk girls, she often tells them, “If I could overcome my circumstances, so can you.” Indeed, she emphasizes this sentiment because she recognizes the similarities between herself and these young women.
Apart from “Jailhouse to Milhouse,” Hayden mentioned that she’s collaborated on a musical’s book and lyrics as well. She expressed her desire to bring it to life, but admittedly, the current state of theater post-COVID isn’t promising. She shared her struggles in getting the show staged in New York, and left open the possibility of future developments.
As Hayden prepares for retirement, she anticipates continued interactions with her fans, many of whom frequently discuss their cherished Milhouse scenes and quotes. Among these favorites, one often-mentioned quote is “Everything’s coming up Milhouse,” and another is Milhouse quoting Prince: “This is what it feels like when doves cry.
She remarked that everyone has their preferred choice, and she admired Milhouse because despite being mistreated, he maintained an optimistic outlook, believing each day would improve. Regardless of reality, this resilience is fantastic. I believe it’s a powerful metaphor for living.
Milhouse was introduced alongside Bart before “The Simpsons” debuted, back in a 1989 Butterfinger advertisement. As stated by creator Matt Groening, Bart required someone to converse with during the school cafeteria scene, so they named him Milhouse because it was the most unfortunate name for a child. Pamela provided numerous laughs through her portrayal of Milhouse, the clumsy kid with an oversized nose in Springfield. She made Milhouse both amusing and relatable, and we will dearly miss her.
James L Brooks, the executive producer, commented, “She embodies an exceptional spirit that has shone in every cast she’s been a part of. We will truly miss her.” Matt Selman, another showrunner and executive producer, added, “Pamela’s unique blend of talent, joy, and love for her characters has left a spellbinding impact on ‘The Simpsons’. Her legacy will forever be cherished as ‘Everything’s coming up Pamela!’
Over time, Hayden, much like Milhouse, has been astounded by the diverse roles she’s been given, such as singing the French National Anthem as a young boy of six. Alongside the “Simpsons” cast and producers, she’s ventured to Europe, participating in live shows in London and Edinburgh, and performing at comedy festivals in Aspen and Montreal. Additionally, she’s had the privilege of working alongside numerous legendary stars, including Meryl Streep, throughout her career.
She reminisced that when The Rolling Stones were present, it seemed Keith and Mick weren’t conversing at that time, leading us to record them individually. I believe Keith was holding a drink in one of his ‘paws,’ making it difficult for him to handle the script or put it down since he only has two, doesn’t he?
Producers of ‘The Simpsons’ are considering trying out a new actor for the parts previously played by Milhouse and Hayden. She mentioned that since it’s a comedy series, the characters won’t be killed off. Instead, she advises anyone auditioning to bring their unique take on the characters, rather than attempting to mimic her portrayal.
As a film enthusiast, I find myself in a tricky situation when it comes to imitating characters that have already been established. It’s not about merely mimicking; instead, it’s about finding a way to make the character my own while staying true to its original essence. I believe in adding my unique touch, my personal gift, to the portrayal of each character I play, so they can truly shine at their best.
Regarding what she’ll miss the most about portraying Milhouse, Hayden highlighted the close bonds she formed with her co-stars and many long-standing producers from “The Simpsons” that she worked with.
She praised the well-crafted personalities, “Those characters are exceptionally detailed.” She admitted, “I’ll always carry a soft spot for the boy with blue hair.” Regardless of future events, she added, “The story continues forward.
