Bowen Yang Says His First ‘SNL’ Screen Test Was a ‘Disaster’ After Lorne Michaels Interaction: ‘I Pandered to His Canadianness’

As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for uncovering hidden gems and untold stories of Hollywood, I must say that Bowen Yang’s journey to Saturday Night Live is nothing short of remarkable. His tale of resilience, humility, and the power of human connection serves as an inspiring testament to the spirit of perseverance in showbiz.

In my own words, during my early audition for “Saturday Night Live,” I had a conversation with the creator, Lorne Michaels, that didn’t turn out as smoothly as I would have liked, based on what I later understood from my personal account as a comedian.

In a recent chat on “Hot Ones,” I reminisced about my audition back in 2017 for that late-night comedy sketch series, which sadly, never made it to our screens.

The last phase of that procedure involves a private conversation with Lorne, alongside another producer named Erik Kenward, as he mentioned. In this encounter, my initial words were, “I’m also Canadian; I hail from Montreal, Quebec.” However, it backfired instantly, creating an awkward atmosphere. The reason I didn’t secure the job was because I had overemphasized our shared Canadian background, which turned out to be a catastrophe.

Back in 2018, I got the incredible opportunity to join the esteemed team of “SNL” as a staff writer. The following year, I was thrilled when they promoted me to an on-air featured player. Then, in 2021, history was made when I became the first “SNL” featured player ever nominated for an Emmy in an acting category. What an unforgettable journey!

Upon Yang’s arrival at the show, Aidy Bryant, who was a cast member at that time, offered him some guidance on interacting with Michaels.

Yang shared that Aidy Bryant had said to her, ‘You might as well become friends with him,'” recalled Yang. “This remark provided the boost of confidence I needed to approach him and say, ‘It turns out we can connect on a personal level,’ which I hadn’t expected from him before.

On the show “Hot Ones,” Yang advertised the Universal film “Wicked” which features Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo and Jeff Goldblum in its cast. In this Jon M. Chu-directed musical movie, Yang portrays Pfannee, a faithful friend to Glinda (Grande). Notably, the film is the beginning of two upcoming cinematic versions based on the Broadway musical.

“Wicked” is theaters now.
