As a devoted Outlander fan who has witnessed the love story of Claire and Jamie unfold over the years, I must say that the second time they made love, during their wedding night, is undoubtedly my favorite sex scene. The intimacy, passion, and emotional connection between the two characters was palpable, making it a truly unforgettable moment in the series.
Initially published on November 30, 2018, this article has been revised due to ongoing steamy scenes in the series. With the arrival of Outlander’s season seven, part two, we’ve added the romantic scenes from seasons four through seven, part one.
Any true fan of “Outlander” would passionately argue that this Starz drama, along with the novels it’s adapted from by Diana Gabaldon, is far from being a traditional romance or “bodice-ripper.” In fact, they’d be correct. “Outlander” skillfully combines historical fiction, action, and yes, romance to narrate the tale of Claire Randall (played by Caitriona Balfe), a former WWII nurse who accidentally time-travels and finds herself in love with 18th-century Highland warrior Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan). This series certainly challenges genre norms, appealing to both male and female audiences almost equally.
It’s undeniable that one captivating aspect of the series is its abundance of explicit love scenes, thanks to premium cable. These steamy encounters are not only intensely passionate but often cater to the female perspective. These romantic moments aren’t just about portraying an unreachable ideal, but rather showcasing intimate moments between adults that reveal something about their characters. Almost always, these encounters result in mutual satisfaction for both parties.
With the second half of Outlander’s seventh season underway, Vulture has delved thoroughly into the series’ numerous romantic scenes, assessing and ranking each of the 32 encounters. This evaluation was based on a sophisticated system that considered intensity, length, mutual pleasure, and plot progression (with plot advancement given the least importance, as we can admit that our primary interest lies elsewhere).
All that’s left to do now is take a good, long look …

The French Connection
Season 2, Episode 7 — “Faith”
In one of the least passionate sexual encounters in the series, our heroine Claire agrees to give her body to King Louis XV as a means to free her husband Jamie, who had been caught dueling, which was forbidden in 18th-century France. As she lies down on the king’s ornate bedding, still fully clothed, Claire thinks of England and closes her eyes. King Louis XV moves rhythmically several times (as per my count) before completing the act. With this, Jamie’s pardon is granted, and Claire can hardly wait to leave France.

The Reviver
Season 5, Episode 9 — “Monsters and Heroes”
In 1960, modern cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was pioneered by engineer William Bennet Kouwenhoven, and by 1966, it became a widely taught life-saving technique for both medical professionals and laypeople, as attested by the American Red Cross. This historical fact is crucial to understanding the peculiar scene we are about to discuss from the series ‘Outlander’. In this instance, Jamie is bitten by a venomous snake during a hunting expedition, causing him to fall into a critical condition. Claire, a doctor who had access to future medical practices until 1968, couldn’t find a pulse on Jamie. Instead of administering chest compressions, which she should have been trained in as a surgeon, she resorted to an unorthodox method: she removed her nightgown, lay on top of Jamie, and performed manual stimulation. Remarkably, this act revived him! This scene is undoubtedly the most outrageous sexual encounter depicted in ‘Outlander’.

The Honey Pot
Season 2, Episode 2 — “Not in Scotland Anymore”
Following the harrowing ordeal inflicted by Black Jack Randall, I, Jamie, grapple with the idea of reconnecting intimately with my beloved wife. Desiring to reignite our passion, Claire decides on an invigorating French spa ritual – a wax, and proudly displays the outcome to me. “Your love nest is vacant!” I exclaim in surprise. “I assumed you’d find it intriguing,” she responds. As we attempt to make love, my mind is suddenly flooded with memories of Black Jack, causing me to halt abruptly. Instead, we end up drifting off to sleep, a poignant reminder of the emotional toll I’ve endured. This scene is truly heart-wrenching, showcasing just how deeply damaged Jamie has become as a result of his past traumas.
29.
The Three’s a Crowd
Season 5, Episode 1 — “The Fiery Cross”
In season four, Brianna and Roger got legally married following their hand-fasting ceremony (referenced as No. 7 on our list). This grand event appeared luxurious with numerous family members and friends present. Interestingly, the producers decided to intersperse scenes of Brianna and Roger’s first night as husband and wife with intimate moments of other couples from the wedding party, including Claire and Jamie, and Murtagh and Aunt Jocasta, making love in their private quarters. It seems more fitting for the focus to remain solely on the newlyweds during this significant moment.
28.
The Long-Lost Lover’s Apology
Season 3, Episode 2 — “Surrender”
In simpler terms, Claire and Frank’s relationship is far from healthy after she returns from the future, carrying another man’s baby from the 18th century. Their romantic life is essentially non-existent, which could easily be chalked up to her pregnancy. However, Frank becomes less tolerant of her indifference as time passes. One evening, while they are in bed together, Claire tries to mend things by expressing her feelings for him. Whether she truly means Frank or another man (Jamie) is unclear. She moves closer to him, removing her nightgown. But the scene quickly ends, leaving us guessing about what happens next – it seems symbolic, don’t you think?
27.
The Long-Lost Lover’s Antipathy
Season 3, Episode 2 — “Surrender”
I’ll connect these Claire-Frank scenes because they seamlessly follow each other, as the troubles at the Randall household persist. After some time, while they both enjoy a drink near the fire, Claire once more takes the lead in initiating intimacy, removing her underwear and inviting Frank. He tenderly lays her down next to the crackling fire. “Look at me,” Frank demands as he tries to make love to his wife. “Claire, open your eyes!” He halts when Claire doesn’t comply, accusing her of being lost in thoughts of Jamie. “Claire, when I’m with you, I’m with you. But you’re with him,” he says. With this final insult, it appears that the disastrous sex life of this couple has reached its end.
26.
The Mending
Season 4, Episode 11 — “If Not for Hope”
Experiencing your grown-up time-traveling child for the first time – when you thought a 200-year gap would always exist – inevitably necessitates an adaptation phase, especially when you’re from distinct centuries with contrasting views on women and their roles in society. A disagreement arises between father and daughter when Jamie learns that Brianna has been sexually assaulted, and his reaction is, to put it mildly, extremely outdated. This situation inevitably creates tension not only between Jamie and Brianna but also between Jamie and Claire, as the latter has never had to choose between her husband and daughter before. However, by the end of the day, Claire and Jamie express their feelings openly and reconcile in the best way they know how.
25.
The Last Bang
Season 6, Episode 8 — “I Am Not Alone”
If a violent group armed with rifles were attacking your house, what would you do? In such a situation, Jamie and Claire’s immediate response is to find comfort in each other’s embrace. Given the circumstances, it might be their last moment of liberty – and intimacy – for some time. To put it mildly, they make the most of it (and those close-up shots are quite impressive!).
24.
The One That Got Away
Season 6, Episode 4 — “Hour of the Wolf”
In this rephrased version:
23.
The Maid in a Cave
Season 3, Episode 2 — “Surrender”
This passage suggests an implied intimate scene between characters Jamie and Mary McNab, but it’s not about explicit scenes. The encounter between them is significant and worth mentioning. In this story, Jamie has been living as a hermit on his ancestral land for some time, resembling Grizzly Adams, with a long red beard and mourning the loss of his wife who returned to the future. He’s become more of a burden than help for his sister and her family. To protect them, he plans to be captured by the British. The night before this plan unfolds, Mary visits him, offering shaving supplies and herself. Initially hesitant, given it’s been a long time since he’s had such an encounter (and apparently with no one but his wife Claire), Jamie eventually agrees. Sharing a deep emotional bond as they both bear scars, this intimacy might have helped him prepare for the uncertain mission ahead.
22.
The Jealous Lover
Season 7, Episode 4 — “A Most Uncomfortable Woman”
In a unique twist, nothing quite stirs a man’s possessiveness towards his partner like suspecting another man holds similar desires. Following an unexpected, undesired kiss by the grumpy old Tom Christie on Claire, Jamie feels a pang of jealousy. (Though he has no cause for such feelings, Claire reassures him.) Jamie finds solace in Claire’s comforting words but takes advantage of the moment to initiate removing her clothing and guiding her towards their bed. Their conversation soon escalates into a more intimate exchange as the scene transitions from the couple to their reflection in the mirror.
21.
The Sad Sack
Season 7, Episode 2 — “The Happiest Place on Earth”
Sex on ‘Outlander’ often serves multiple purposes, expressing joy, pain, or sorrow. When Brianna and Roger depart for the future, seeking medical help for their daughter Mandy, Claire and Jamie are left desolate. On their first night as empty nesters, Claire turns to Jamie for comfort. However, she soon withdraws after a few moments, sharing her sadness with him instead. True to form, Jamie listens compassionately. The scene concludes with Claire weeping in Jamie’s arms, yearning for the day when they might be reunited with their family once more.
20.
The Under-Canvas Quickie
Season 6, Episode 8 — “I Am Not Alone”
Following their setup of a tent during Roger’s road trip for ordination, he and Brianna found themselves cozying up beneath the canvas. In an intentionally awkward turn of events (maneuvering a shirt over one’s head with minimal space can feel like an acrobatic feat), they embraced the situation humorously and shared an intimate moment that was quite captivating, given the circumstances.
19.
The First Time
Season 1, Episode 7 — “The Wedding”
In simpler terms, this passage describes the first sexual encounter between Claire and Jamie in the TV series Outlander. They had only known each other for a short while before their wedding, and both were nervous. After exchanging vows, they delayed their intimacy by eating, drinking, and talking. Later, two of Jamie’s friends barged in to check if they had consummated their marriage. Claire was the one who suggested going to bed, to which Jamie jokingly replied with a wink. They began undressing each other but were interrupted when Jamie spun Claire around, causing their first encounter to be brief and unsatisfying for Claire. However, they will have a better experience later on.
18.
The Angel’s Share
Season 6, Episode 1 — “Echoes”
In the presence of his old cellmate Tom Christie at Ridge, Jamie finds himself lost in memories of Ardsmuir. Despite having little faith that he’d ever meet Claire again, she was always by his side. “I believe you’re an angel, Claire,” Jamie confesses to her. “Is this what angels do?” she replies, as she straddles him and initiates a passionate kiss and undressing session. “It feels like I’ve gone to heaven,” he responds. Although the conversation isn’t particularly refined, it’s challenging not to be moved by their palpable affection and tenderness. Later, as Claire traces the scars on Jamie’s back, it serves as a poignant reminder of the numerous trials this couple has faced to find and keep each other.
17.
The Mourners’ Embrace
Season 4, Episode 1 — “America the Beautiful”
As a newcomer to this strange land, I’ve found myself deeply moved by the tale of Claire and Jamie. After the unjust execution of a dear friend, wrongly accused and hanged for a crime that was ultimately a tragic misunderstanding, they’ve turned to each other for solace amidst their grief. In these trying times, there’s nothing quite as reassuring as the warmth shared between two souls. Huddled close by a roaring fire, they found comfort in one another, their tender moments serving as a poignant reminder of their unbreakable bond. Although this scene is heartwarming, it doesn’t quite match the passion-filled encounters that have defined their relationship over the past four seasons.
16.
The Witchy Woman
Season 1, Episode 11 — “The Devil’s Mark”
Following an instance where she was nearly accused of witchcraft and faced being burned at the stake, Claire discloses her hidden truth to Jamie: she’s a time-traveler. With this revelation, Jamie understands his course of action – tomorrow, he will escort Claire to the stones for her safe return to her own era. However, tonight, amidst the wilderness, they share their farewell moments. Jamie gently lifts her skirt, yet Jamie declines; this evening is meant for Claire’s satisfaction. So, he skillfully caresses her with his experienced Scottish hands, aware that this might be their final intimate moment together. Jamie, always selfless, is indeed a giver in every sense.
15.
The Reunion Sex
Season 3, Episode 6 — “A. Malcolm”
Twenty years, or roughly six episodes, worth of anticipation: After centuries separated, Claire and Jamie reunite in 18th-century Scotland. However, their reunion isn’t the idyllic scene one might expect. Despite their ardent feelings (“I have longed for you so much,” Jamie admits), their chemistry is a bit off-kilter. Witness their clumsy head butt as they tangle in bed. Yet, their passion remains undiminished. “Do it now and be gentle this time!” Claire urges, and things heat up. Their subsequent encounter later that night flows more smoothly (with fewer mishaps): This time, they lie on their sides facing one another, moving at a leisurely pace. It’s great to have them back together again.
14.
The Healing Touch
Season 2, Episode 4 — “La Dame Blanche”
Following several weeks of silent torment, Jamie reveals to Claire the trauma of being sexually assaulted by Black Jack Randall. He doubts if he can continue being the man Claire desires, but Claire firmly dismisses this notion. They have a heated disagreement and spend the night in separate bedrooms. However, under the light of the moon, Claire silently approaches Jamie’s room, removes her nightgown, and invites him to “find” her. She (with her baby bump) mounts him, and he becomes fully present – present in a way that hasn’t happened for months, as if Claire’s love can drive away his inner turmoil. And it appears that it does, offering some relief.
13.
The Scentual Moment
Season 5, Episode 11 — “Journeycake”
As a movie enthusiast, I never imagined that a hint of barnyard scent could be such a potent love elixir! Yet, Claire seems to know something I don’t – she sprinkles on her favorite perfume despite Jamie reeking of the stable. Instead, he dozes off without a touch, waking later to find her at the window, not exactly sharing a passionate moment as expected (more like a sudden warmth… a hot flash!). He makes up for his earlier lapse by lifting sweaty Claire onto the windowsill, pushing up her nightgown, and diving in headfirst. It’s not their most memorable love scene yet (that’s still to unfold), but it’s always refreshing to see a woman enjoying her moments of delight.
12.
The Birthday Bombshell
Season 5, Episode 7 — “The Ballad of Roger Mac”
At the break of dawn on Jamie’s 50th birthday, Claire notices him reflecting as they remain in bed together. Most of his belongings appear to be functioning well. In simpler terms, Jamie has declared that he’s in good working condition, a phrase he humorously expresses as “My manhood is standing tall on its own in the morning!” Claire can verify this observation and decides to jump on top of him, whispering an affectionate, Marilyn Monroe-inspired rendition of “Happy Birthday, Dear Colonel.” (Remember, this was before U.S. presidents were commonly addressed as such.) The historical reference may be lost on Jamie, but the playful nature of the moment remains undiminished.
11.
The Pearl Necklace
Season 1, Episode 7 — “The Wedding”
On their wedding night, after multiple tries with mixed results, Jamie leaves their bed and starts searching through his items, eventually finding what he was looking for – his mother’s pearl necklace. He offers this sentimental token to his bride, gently placing it around her neck. She is moved by the gift, as it’s one of the few remaining possessions Jamie has from his late mother, and Claire proudly wears it while sitting on Jamie. This scene might not have the same passion as their later encounters, but it carries a significant emotional weight. It marks the start of… something new and meaningful between them.
10.
The Kink in the Castle
Season 1, Episode 1 — “Sassenach”
In this opening scene of ‘Outlander’, Claire and her husband Frank are on their honeymoon in the Scottish Highlands, aiming to rejuvenate their relationship after war. While exploring an old castle (a place where Claire will later heal in the 18th century), she playfully climbs onto a table and starts unfastening her garter. Surprised, Frank says, “I didn’t realize you left your undergarments at home, Mrs. Randall.” Claire then raises her skirt and guides Frank’s head towards her, setting the stage for ‘Outlander’, a series that showcases women taking an active role in their relationships.
9.
The Short Good-bye
Season 2, Episode 13 — “Dragonfly in Amber”
As the impending Battle of Culloden threatens, Jamie firmly urges Claire and their yet-to-be-born child to traverse the stones into the future for safety, with Frank. Despite her resistance, Claire’s determination is no match for Jamie’s persistence. Pondering his unique wife, he reflects, “Lord, I cherished this woman deeply.” In a poignant farewell at the stone’s base, they bid each other goodbye, knowing their separation would be eternal. Seized by an overwhelming urgency, Jamie expresses their lifelong passion in mere seconds before the sounds of gunfire and cannons echo in the distance. In that instant, Claire vanishes through the stones.
8.
The Makeup Sex
Season 1, Episode 1 — “Sassenach”
On a romantic honeymoon, the most uncomfortable topic to bring up might be one partner questioning the other’s past infidelity. For instance, Frank unexpectedly asks Claire if she had ever been unfaithful during their separate tours of duty. This question leaves Claire upset, as she has always been faithful to Frank, causing a heated argument. However, just moments later, they reconcile, with Claire stating that sex helped them reconnect. This scene marks the first explicit sex scene in the series, featuring bare bodies passionately moving together. It seems that their disagreement might have been worth resolving after all.
7.
The Hand-Fasting
Season 4, Episode 8 — “Wilmington”
In a less than ideal turn of events during their initial intimate encounter, Roger seemed to criticize Brianna for not wanting to marry him while agreeing to sleep with him. Needless to say, he didn’t have a successful night! However, things took an unexpected turn when Roger followed Brianna through the stones to the 18th century. Intrigued by this man who had pursued her across centuries, Brianna agreed to a traditional Highland ritual called “hand fasting,” which united them in a symbolic marriage. With a sense of irony, she stated, “How could I turn down a man who chased me for 200 years?
6.
The Landlubber
Season 3, Episode 13 — “Eye of the Storm”
As a cinephile captivated by the sea-bound storyline of “Outlander”, I find myself immersed in the adventure of Claire and Jamie, navigating their way back to Scotland after saving Young Ian, Jamie’s nephew. In their cabin, while tending to his appearance, Jamie shares with Claire his thoughts about their reunion on dry land, hinting at plans he has for her. And let me tell you, the director didn’t shy away from portraying those plans – vividly!
5.
The Unsheathed Sword
Season 1, Episode 9 — “The Reckoning”
In the 18th century, social norms appear strikingly distinct from today’s, as shown by an incident where Claire is punished by her husband Jamie for disregarding one of his instructions – this is not about BDSM, but rather a physical punishment involving multiple strokes on her bottom. As the episode concludes, both characters reach an accord: Jamie vows never to strike Claire again. However, Claire wants assurance. In their intimate moment by the fire, Claire takes control and seizes Jamie’s dagger, pointing it at his throat while continuing their lovemaking without interruption. She issues a stern warning: “If you ever lay a hand on me again, James Fraser, I will remove your heart for breakfast. Do you understand?” He acknowledges her words, affirming that she belongs to him. Though we do not endorse nonconsensual knife play, it’s captivating to witness a woman assert herself after being mistreated.
4.
The Undercover Lover
Season 1, Episode 10 — “By the Pricking of My Thumb”
If you’re quick to skip scenes, you might have overlooked this particular one entirely. Producers often don’t give credits their due time, instead jumping straight into Claire and Jamie in bed. At first glance, it may seem like Claire is just sleeping, but as she starts to move and make sounds, you quickly understand that something more intimate is taking place. The scene becomes clear when the camera moves down Claire’s body and reveals Jamie’s head adorned with a flaming crown. A knock at the door interrupts, but Jamie ignores it, repeatedly saying “No! No! No!” Finally, he finishes what he was doing before answering the door to an embarrassed Murtaugh. Are you feeling warm yet?
3.
The Phil Her Up
Season 7, Episode 7 — “A Practical Guide for Time-Travelers”
To put it plainly, the music choices for Outlander have typically been quite narrow-minded and traditional. (For instance, do we opt for the somber or cheerful bagpipes?) Therefore, it’s delightfully unexpected when the soundtrack shifts to ’80s soft rock during a scene set in the 20th century. With nothing but their trailer as temporary quarters, Roger and Brianna engage in some playful banter before Roger picks up his bride, tossing her onto their chaotic mustard-yellow floral bedding – all while “In the Air Tonight” by Phil Collins plays, marking the beat. Thanks to this iconic song from Phil Collins and the actors’ increasing comfort with such intimate scenes, it could be argued that this is Brianna and Roger’s most passionate moment so far.
2.
The Turtle Soup
Season 3, Episode 11 — “Uncharted”
In this popular scene from the novel “Voyager”, a tipsy Claire, intoxicated by turtle soup, orders Jamie to lock the cabin door of their ship. With a clumsy shove, she pushes him onto the desk and exclaims, “I imagine this is what making love in hell feels like!” Jamie replies humorously. As they prepare to engage, there’s a knock on the door; it’s their shipmate Willoughby, seeking confirmation if Claire desires more broth (rumored as an aphrodisiac). Jamie tries to quieten the drunken Claire, and eventually, Willoughby catches on. This scene is one of the amusing and playful sexual encounters in the series – a refreshing break from the usual intense bedroom scenes.
1.
The Second Time
Season 1, Episode 7 — “The Wedding”
In “The Wedding,” it becomes apparent that Jamie demonstrates a remarkable aptitude for learning quickly. This is evident in their second intimate encounter, contrasting with their initial fumbling attempt. Instead of rushing, they focus on prolonging foreplay, admiring each other’s bodies as if appreciating masterpieces. Eventually, Jamie lifts Claire and places her gently on the bed. Their passion is so intense that during climax, Jamie becomes concerned for Claire’s well-being. Intrigued, he inquires if such intensity occurs regularly. “Only if the man is a very good lover,” Claire replies, still breathless, before biting his chest and proceeding to pleasure him. And thus, readers, this Outlander love scene will forever leave us awestruck.
