How ‘Emilia Pérez’ Star Karla Sofia Gascón Transformed Into a Menacing Drug Lord

As a film enthusiast who has spent countless hours marveling at the transformative power of cinema, I must say that Karla Sofia Gascón‘s dual performance in “Emilia Perez” is nothing short of breathtaking. The dedication and artistry that went into crafting Emilia’s pre-transition and post-transition looks are a testament to the boundless creativity that exists within the film industry.

Warning: Actress Karla Sofia Gascón portrays dual characters in the movie “Emilia Perez,” directed by Jacques Audiard.

The movie currently available on Netflix tells the story of Emilia, portrayed by Karla Sofia Gascón, a notorious drug lord. In an attempt to escape her dangerous life, she enlists the aid of lawyer Rita (played by Zoe Saldaña), to orchestrate her apparent demise and undergo gender-confirming surgery.

In his portrayal, Gascón depicts a formidable drug lord before Emilia’s transformation. The character of Randy Robinson in “The Wrestler,” played by Mickey Rourke, served as the main inspiration for this role. From start to finish, it took three hours to create Emilia’s pre-transition appearance, with an hour and a half dedicated to applying prosthetics.

As a cinephile, I immersed myself in transforming Emilia for her role. Prosthetics were meticulously placed on my nose, jawline, and cheeks to achieve the most masculine appearance possible. Working hand-in-hand with SFX makeup artist Jean Christophe Spadaccini, we experimented tirelessly, altering noses, creating damaged skin textures, and styling hair to embody fear. My goal was to instill a sense of terror in our audience. Drawing inspiration from Mickey Rourke’s character in ‘The Wrestler’, I aimed for a face that bore the scars of brutal hand-to-hand combat yet retained an allure, complete with tattoos, long hair, thin eyebrows, and metallic teeth.

Carbonel also added face tattoos.

As a devoted admirer, I can truly relate to this character on a profoundly intimate level. If given the chance, I, too, would make history as the first openly trans actress to secure a nomination for the prestigious Academy Award.

In Emilia’s post-transition appearance, Gascón collaborated closely with Carbonel. “I aimed for the character to be strikingly beautiful and as far as possible from any hint of masculinity,” said Gascón. “The team eventually chose a color scheme (which included shades of beige, khaki, yellow, brown, and peach) that accentuated her delicate features.” Gascón added, “I found myself putting my trust in the team and their innovative suggestions.
