Anne Hathaway to Star in Colleen Hoover’s ‘Verity’ Movie Adaptation

As a long-time fan of Colleen Hoover’s gripping and intricate storytelling, I can hardly contain my excitement about Anne Hathaway stepping into the role of Verity Crawford in the upcoming film adaptation of “Verity.” Having followed Hathaway’s career since her early days on the silver screen, I have no doubt that she will bring a captivating and nuanced performance to this complex character.

Actress Anne Hathaway is set to play the lead role in the forthcoming movie version of Colleen Hoover’s hugely popular book “Verity.

In this adaptation, we find a character named Verity Crawford, a renowned author, who, following a severe car accident, finds herself unable to complete her popular thriller series due to her injuries. To fill the gap, Verity’s husband Jeremy hires an underdog writer named Lowen with a substantial sum of money. Eager for the opportunity, Lowen takes on the task but soon discovers hidden secrets within Verity’s manuscripts – secrets that suggest chilling revelations about Verity and her family’s past. As a result, Lowen must decide whether Verity is an exceptional storyteller or a dangerous psychopath.

Michael Showalter, who collaborated with Hathaway on the romantic comedy “The Idea of You” this year, is set to direct the upcoming film for Amazon MGM. As of now, a release date in theaters has not been finalized. The screenplay was penned by Nick Antosca, following earlier attempts by Hillary Seitz, Angela LaManna, and Will Honley & April Maguire.

Under their own production companies – Somewhere Pictures, Heartbones Entertainment, and Semi-Formal Productions – Hathaway, Hoover, and Showalter will take on producer roles. Antosca from Eat the Cat, Mollick from Semi-Formal Productions, and Stacey Sher from Shiny Penny are also producers. Lauren Levine of Heartbones Entertainment will serve as executive producer. The movie is part of Semi-Formal Productions’ initial film agreement with the studio.

Originally self-published in the year 2018, “Verity” experienced a literary boom, remaining on the New York Times best-sellers list for several months. In just the year 2023, it sold over a million copies independently. This captivating novel is often compared to classics such as “Rebecca” and “Gone Girl,” being categorized as a blend of gothic and psychosexual suspense.

Colleen Hoover has garnered significant attention from Hollywood following the success of her best-selling book “It Ends With Us,” which unexpectedly turned into a blockbuster movie this past summer, earning $349 million worldwide on a budget of just $25 million. Directed by Justin Baldoni and starring Blake Lively, the film was a huge hit. However, due to creative differences on set between Lively and Baldoni, it’s unlikely they will collaborate again for the potential sequel “It Starts With Us.” On a more promising note, a film adaptation of Hoover’s novel “Reminders of Him” is currently being developed by Universal Pictures.
