As a seasoned movie buff with a penchant for savoring the finer details of television, I must say that this week’s episode was a delightful blend of humor, character development, and subtle commentary on modern masculinity.
Once more, the eternal vampires from Staten Island, endowed with extraordinary abilities such as superhuman strength, mind manipulation, and flight, have been defeated in combat by their arch-nemesis: televised sports. This time around, Laszlo seemed to embody a rebellious teenage goth being compelled to watch football with his uncles, as Sean was struck down by a condition called “March Madness,” which affects both humans and demons (apparently).
In the current episode, some scenes could have seemed like an easy target for humor, especially reminiscent of when Sean and Charmaine were first introduced in “Superb Owl” from season two. However, times have changed, and we’re back to poking fun at athletic types. “March Madness” manages this without resorting to overt jokes, which is refreshing. Instead, it’s a part of a more subtle satire of masculine posturing that subtly permeates this week’s installment.
The theme is evident in the Sean story line, of course. But my favorite manifestation is smaller: the bizarre exchange between office bros Jimmy and Raj (a.k.a. our old Clickhole friends Jeremy and Rajat) next to Guillermo’s desk, where they get in Guillermo’s face (literally) about the dick outline in Jimmy’s pants before wrapping their arms around each other’s waists and bragging about how they’re going to injure the shit out of each other on the basketball court later that day. (I’m paraphrasing, of course.)
In the offices of Cannon Capital, it’s not uncommon for physical violence to occur, which is fitting considering the highly competitive and macho culture prevalent there, including among the women. This aggressive environment is deeply entrenched within finance, often referred to as ‘bro-dom’. Colin, with his extensive experience in 137 offices across various roles, has a keen intuition about this, which leads him to demonstrate goodwill towards Guillermo by publicly assaulting him at work. This act can be seen as a friendly gesture, possibly even expressing gratitude or appreciation, similar to Nadja paving the way for Guillermo’s promotion to executive assistant, albeit in a more dramatic fashion. If Colin were to pursue a career in Human Resources, he might prove quite effective.
It could be said that Guillermo’s identity struggle extends beyond just not having the job stability of characters like Bobblehead Kyle or Danny, the Office Barefoot Guy. Instead, his journey to find his purpose in life has been a significant theme throughout several seasons of the show. Now, with his new role as The Vault (not The Tight Vault, though I could make an off-color joke about it, but I won’t), Guillermo seems to be approaching a true resolution. His growing self-assurance from his professional achievements might just be the old, groaning wind beneath his wings as he takes flight among the living, like Jordan.
At home, Sean and Laszlo are forming a more tender form of male camaraderie. Once more, Laszlo demonstrates his true friend by showing empathy towards Sean’s vulnerable existence. Though he won’t hesitate to grab him a Jersey Mike’s sub for hospital dining, it’s important to note that concerns about cholesterol didn’t surface until the late 18th century. Given Laszlo was occupied with meeting Nadja and transforming into a vampire around that time, we’ll cut him some slack.
In a heartfelt moment, I found myself moved when Sean eased Laszlo’s worries about parting ways with his cherished human friend by emphasizing that the fear of mortality heightens the value of each life-affirming instant – a concept perhaps beyond the grasp of an ancient vampire. Yet, Laszlo’s disregard for Sean’s wellbeing in other episodes (he was too concerned about preserving his brand new gym shoes!) balanced out this tender exchange.
The same cold-heartedness is noticeable in both situations: Laszlo’s Monster pleads with its creator for mercy against further mutilation, while the office is irritated by Nadja’s persistent banana phone prank that eventually rots. However, it would be infuriating for her if she discovered her husband permitting The Guide to practice witchcraft, including summoning demons, in their own backyard. (There seems to be a symbolic message within these events.) Nonetheless, this situation might prove beneficial as it could upset Nadja significantly if the truth were revealed about her husband’s occult activities.
In the recent turn of events, The Guide might emerge victorious as he’s currently the most sought-after solitary vampire within the New York metropolitan region. On the flip side, unfortunate Nandor finds himself being snubbed by both The Guide and Charmaine in this week’s episode. It appears that taking care of one’s companion’s wife during his recovery from battle had a unique connotation back in Al Qolnidar. Nowadays, it primarily involves odd foot massages and watching Love Island episodes wrapped in leopard-print fleece. To be fair, things could always be worse. You could find yourself with your hand trapped in a sharps disposal bin.

• Blaming demons for “the winter blahs” is old-school medicine indeed.
Nadja persistently rocks ’80s workplace style, donning a vibrant purple dress paired with a ruffled top in a similar shade, reminiscent of Prince’s color palette.
• “She’s the Louise to my Thelma, if that movie was a banana comedy.”
Doesn’t it seem like Matt Berry was imitating Sean Connery when he exclaimed, “a genuine mess-up”?
In this week’s episode, it’s important to give credit to the Visual Effects team, who truly shone in a show filled with intense visuals involving blood and flames.
“Another ability showcased several times this week is the extraordinary strength associated with vampires, serving as a stark comparison to the frailty of humans.
Initially, I assumed your question “Did you discuss ‘the thing’ with Mike” had a more suspicious connotation.
Regarding that topic: The last instance I recall where someone mentioned, “I’m struggling to keep up with it,” was during my time in the adult film industry, you know? *Whaaaat!*
