Angelina Jolie to Star in ‘Proxima’ Director Alice Winocour’s Next Film, Set During Paris Fashion Week (EXCLUSIVE)

As a lifelong cinephile and a connoisseur of Angelina Jolie‘s extraordinary talent, I can hardly contain my excitement about her upcoming role in “Stitches.” The fact that this film is set against the vibrant backdrop of Parisian high fashion, a world I’ve only ever dreamt of experiencing, makes it even more enticing.

After garnering critical acclaim for her portrayal of the renowned opera singer Maria Callas in Pablo Larraín’s “Maria,” Angelina Jolie plans to revisit Paris, where she will take on a leading role in Alice Winocour’s upcoming directorial project.

The film, named “Stitches” or “Sewing Threads,” takes place in the glamorous realm of haute couture and transpires in the city of Paris. In this production, Jolie portrays a movie director, being one of three characters whose paths will intersect during Fashion Week.

Filming will commence at the beginning of the upcoming year, led by Charles Gillibert’s Paris-based production company, CG Cinema. This project is being collaboratively produced alongside Zhang Xin and William Horberg from Closer Media.

Stitches” brings Winocour together with Pathé Films, a prominent French production-distribution company, once again following the acclaimed movie “Paris Memories.” This film debuted at Cannes’ Directors Fortnight and garnered its lead actress Virginie Efira a Cesar Award (the French equivalent of an Oscar) for her portrayal of a survivor of a severe terrorist attack.

In France, Pathé Films will distribute the film “Stitches,” while Hanway Films manages its international sales. This production will be filmed in both French and English, following a similar approach taken by Winocour’s previous movie, “Proxima.” In “Proxima,” Eva Green played an astronaut preparing for a year-long mission on the International Space Station while dealing with the emotional turmoil of leaving her young daughter behind and confronting a predominantly male work environment. For this performance, Green was nominated for a Cesar Award, and the film received the platform prize at Toronto and the jury award at San Sebastian.

Jolie recently visited Paris to shoot “Maria,” a film that depicts the legendary Greek opera singer towards the end of her life in the 1970s. This movie had its first screening at the Venice Film Festival, where it received an impressive eight-minute long standing ovation.

15 years since her last nomination, Jolie has found herself contending for the Best Actress award with her portrayal of Callas. Her last nomination was in 2009 for her performance in Clint Eastwood’s “The Changeling,” and she had won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 2000 for “Girl, Interrupted.” “Maria” marks a reunion between director Larraín and writer Steven Knight, following their previous collaboration on the Oscar-nominated film “Spencer.

Currently, Gilbert is involved in a lineup of global projects, such as Jim Jarmusch’s upcoming film “Father Mother Sister Brother,” which features Cate Blanchett and Adam Driver, and Kristen Stewart’s first directorial venture, titled “The Chronology of Water.” This project is an adaptation of the 2011 memoir by Lidia Yuknavitch.
