Remedy Clarifies Its Stance On Using AI In Games

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I can’t help but feel a sense of both excitement and trepidation when it comes to the integration of AI in video games. Having witnessed the evolution of game development from 2D pixelated graphics to the immersive worlds we have today, I’ve seen how technology has transformed gaming.

The field of Artificial Intelligence is casting a hazy picture over several industries, including video games, leaving developers uncertain about what impact it may have on game creation in the future. However, Remedy, the developer behind Alan Wake 2 and Control, has shed light on their views on AI while disclosing that they’ve been using it for quite some time already.

During Remedy’s financial presentation, the chief technology officer, Mika Vehkala, noted that AI is a broad field they’ve been exploring even before its recent surge in popularity. They continue to collaborate with partners to uncover opportunities related to AI, and currently employ some popular tools that fit their current requirements.

Alongside Markus Mäki, the chief product officer, Vehkala clarified that Remedy Entertainment isn’t employing AI to replace artistic roles or actors. Instead, they are utilizing this technology to manage monotonous tasks in game development, such as analyzing movements from motion-capture performances. Furthermore, Vehkala revealed that there is someone within the company specifically tasked with monitoring new technologies. However, he emphasized that Remedy isn’t hastily adopting it.

In October, Remedy Entertainment unveiled the initial glimpse of FBC: Firebreak, an upcoming spin-off from Control, scheduled for release in 2025. It was recently hinted that the Downloadable Content (DLC) for Alan Wake 2 might include a teaser for Control 2, though no release date has been announced yet for that game. Other potential titles within Remedy’s upcoming projects may also be influenced by their incorporation of AI technology.
