As a seasoned gamer with years of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and curiosity upon hearing that Control 2 is shifting genres to become an action RPG. Having traversed the twisted corridors of the Oldest House in the original game and dabbled in the supernatural mysteries it held, I’m eager to explore this new direction Remedy Entertainment has chosen for Jesse Faden’s journey.
At Remedy Entertainment’s Capital Markets Day 2024 event, they revealed that the eagerly awaited sequel to the 2019 action-adventure game, Control, is being developed as an Action Role Playing Game (ARPG). However, at this stage, there are no new images or footage showing how this genre change will be implemented. Instead, several slides in their presentation categorize Control 2 under the ARPG classification.
In the debut of Control, players take on the role of Jesse Faden. She is assigned to probe a structure known as ‘The Oldest House’, situated in New York. This building serves as the main hub for the Federal Bureau of Control, but it’s been tainted by an ominous force. Players will need to delve into various sectors of the facility, acquire new abilities for Jesse, and uncover the source of the corruption plaguing The Oldest House.
Firebreak, which takes place in the same universe as Control.
In a fresh twist to a traditional Role-Playing Game (RPG), the studio RGG has showcased a significant genre shift in their work with the Like A Dragon series, previously known as the Yakuza series. The change became apparent when Yakuza: Like A Dragon transitioned the mainline series from an action-oriented beat ’em up brawler game to a turn-based RPG format.
The sequel to “Control” is expected to launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC platforms, but a specific release date or timeframe remains undisclosed at this point. Initially, it was planned as a joint development and publication project with the publisher of the original Control game, 505 Games. However, since then, Remedy Entertainment has taken full ownership of the “Control” intellectual property from 505 Games, which they acquired in February. Kudos to Gematsu for bringing this news to our attention!
In the slides for Capital Markets Day 2024, it is stated that Control 2 has been categorized as an Action Role-Playing Game (RPG), whereas the original Control was clearly labeled as an Action-Adventure game.
