As a seasoned cinema enthusiast who has traversed the globe in search of unique and captivating narratives, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement upon hearing about this collaboration between Aview Images from Taiwan and Momo Film Co from Singapore. With such diverse and thought-provoking projects as “The Drought,” “Other People’s Dreams,” and the other forthcoming films in their slate, these production houses are clearly at the forefront of Asian cinema.
Aview Images, a Taiwanese production company, has formed a collaboration with Momo Film Co from Singapore to jointly produce two forthcoming films: “The Drought” directed by Nelson Yeo and “Other People’s Dreams” helmed by Daniel Hui.
Yeo’s second movie, titled ‘The Drought,’ delves into family relationships and individual hardships amid a barren landscape caused by prolonged drought. This production marks Yeo’s reunion with Momo Film Co, following the success of his first film ‘Dreaming & Dying,’ which earned him the Golden Leopard – Filmmaker of the Present and Best First Feature at Locarno 2023.
Hui’s work, titled “Other People’s Dreams,” tells the story of two characters escaping their pasts in Singapore. They survive by stealing and adapt to the city’s nightlife pulse. Recently, this project was awarded a co-production grant at the closing event for the QCinema Project Market, which serves as the industry hub of the QCinema International Film Festival held in the Philippines.
Momo offers an array of films, including “At the Edge of the Sea,” which marks the directorial debut of Anh Le, who produced the 2023 Cannes’ Camera d’Or winner “Inside The Yellow Cocoon Shell.” This Vietnam-set drama delves into the absurd as men mysteriously contract a strange illness. Another offering is “Ria” by Filipino debutant Arvin Belarmino, a film that explores the story of a folk-punk woman caring for her chronically ill foster mother and safeguarding their punk community. Lastly, “To Leave, To Stay,” directed by Cambodia’s Danech San, follows a girl who disappears after meeting a soldier she met online.
This new collaboration follows a string of recent triumphs for both Aview Images and Momo Film Co. “Tale of the Land,” a joint production by Aview Images, received the Fipresci Prize at the Busan International Film Festival 2024. Meanwhile, “Don’t Cry, Butterfly” from Momo Film Co made its debut at Venice Critics’ Week 2024 and won two awards.
Momo Film Co’s Tan Si En shared: “We are embarking on our initial collaboration with Taiwan, and we’re eager to partner with the skilled producers at Aview as well as engage with the local film industry.
