As a longtime fan of both sitcoms and educational television, I must say that the upcoming crossover between “Abbott Elementary” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” has me absolutely thrilled! Having spent years navigating the chaotic world of elementary education myself, I can only imagine the hilarious chaos that would ensue when those unruly “Sunny” gang members set foot in a school.
You may have already heard about the exciting crossover episode between “Abbott Elementary” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” scheduled for season four, but could we imagine the teachers from Abbott appearing on other popular TV shows? At the Vulture Festival, where “Abbott” won its first Roomy Award for writers’ rooms, the creators shared that they have several crossover ideas for future seasons. Creator Quinta Brunson is particularly interested in a game show like “America Says”, saying, “You know how it’s always teachers on there, right?” She also mentioned a “Survivor” crossover, while writer Kate Peterman suggested “911”. Jordan Temple, another writer, proposed a crossover with “The Golden Bachelor”, stating, “It feels like the way that they have ‘The Bachelor’ and ‘The Bachelorette’ go before us that they want Mr. Johnson to be on ‘The Golden Bachelor’.” However, Riley Dufurrena added, “I don’t know if his wife would like that though”, but we certainly would!
Brunson and the team provided additional details about how the upcoming episode of “It’s Always Sunny” will fit into the storyline. Justin Halpern, executive producer, explained, “They don’t just pop up in our cold open and then disappear.” Instead, according to Brunson, “Our two episodes are interconnected.” The “It’s Always Sunny” episode is scheduled for January airing, making it an episode of “Abbott Elementary,” but the first “Always Sunny” episode will likely air in June. Rob McElhenney, the creator of “It’s Always Sunny,” visited the “Abbott Elementary” writer’s room for this collaboration, and star Charlie Day even joined via Zoom while ill. However, Brunson emphasized that the real catalyst for this crossover was “corporate synergy.” Since FX, the network airing both shows, is owned by Disney, without this connection, the crossover wouldn’t have been possible.
