As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for environmental narratives and a soft spot for tenacious activists, I find myself deeply moved by the upcoming documentary “Unearth.” Having spent my career chronicling tales of individuals standing up against seemingly insurmountable odds for the greater good, Erin Brockovich‘s involvement as executive producer is nothing short of exhilarating.
Environmental campaigner Erin Brockovich is now attached as an executive producer for the upcoming documentary titled “Unearth.” This documentary, set to debut globally for the first time at DOC NYC on November 16th.
Under the guidance of director Hunter Nolan, the documentary titled “Unearth” unfolds the tale of two families residing in Alaska’s Bristol Bay: the Salmon sisters and the Strickland brothers. These families find themselves alarmed upon discovering ambitious plans for the Pebble Mine – a vast open-pit gold and copper mine – near their homes. The Salmon sisters, native Alaskans, take action on the regulatory front, urging the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to impede the project, while the Strickland brothers, independent fishermen, uncover the reality hidden behind the developer’s claims about the Pebble Mine. Spanning 93 minutes, this documentary exposes the deep-seated flaws in mining practices and the delicate equilibrium between resource demand and environmental impact.
Brockovich stated, ‘This movie serves as a reminder of the hope that activism provides amidst exhaustion and despair.’ I’m greatly moved by Christina and AlexAnna Salmon’s resolute commitment to protecting Bristol Bay from the potential environmental and cultural destruction caused by the Pebble Mine. The film ‘Unearth’ continues my mission of encouraging women and communities to fight against systemic injustices.
Later this year, Brockovich agreed to take on an executive producer role for the movie following its delivery to her agent by Nolan.
Nolan mentioned that when thinking about people who inspired him, Erin stood out as someone who held an industry accountable for its mistakes. When connecting with her agent, there was no doubt in his mind. As soon as Erin saw the movie, she became involved.
Nolan collaborated on the movie “Unearth” with the Strickland siblings, Auberin and Dunedin. Currently, he’s trying to secure distribution for this film at DOC NYC. The director is optimistic that Brockovich’s association with the documentary will eventually result in a sale.
Nolan comments that Erin’s tale serves as a symbol of overcoming powerful obstacles. He finds it profound that she views our movie as an extension of her story. People are yearning for hope and inspiration, and we believe that Erin’s role as Executive Producer suggests that our film can satisfy this craving.
When Donald Trump, newly elected President, chose former New York congressman Lee Zeldin to head the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), it was viewed as a setback for U.S. environmental policy and significant climate regulations. With the new leadership at the EPA, “Unearth” by Nolan might be seen as a call to arms.
Bristol Bay remains vulnerable until we as a society prioritize healthy communities, unpolluted water, and undisturbed habitats,” Nolan stated. “Given the rapid expansion of the mining sector to cater to increasing demand for mined resources, the importance of robust regulations and ways to uphold them has never been more crucial. In light of the potential boost for extractive industries under the new administration, our film underscores that each one of us has the power to be the change we seek, regardless of who is in charge.
