Jake Paul and Mike Tyson Fight Filled With Nonstop Netflix Promotion, From ‘Squid Game’ Guards to ‘America’s Sweethearts’ Cheerleaders

As an old-school movie critic who’s seen the rise of streaming platforms and the decline of traditional cinema, I must say that the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson fight on Netflix was nothing short of a spectacle. The blend of sports, entertainment, and shameless self-promotion was as enticing as a popcorn bucket at a movie premiere.

Why bother with upfronts at all? The initial hour of Netflix’s first live sporting event, Jake Paul versus Mike Tyson, was filled with promotional content from Netflix.

The primary spectacle commenced at 8 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on a Friday evening, and almost straight away, there was an abundance of advertising from Netflix. Prior to the first fight, a brief entertainment segment featured performers who were once in the spotlight as “America’s Sweethearts”, specifically the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders. Since the event was happening at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas – the Cowboys’ home ground – the connection was too compelling to ignore.

The opening bout in the main event featured a super middleweight clash between Neeraj Goyat from India and Brazil’s Whindersson Nunes. Throughout the fight, it came to light that Nunes has three comedy specials available on Netflix, while Goyat previously participated in “Ultimate Beastmaster: India” on the streaming platform.

During brief pauses in the Goyat-Nunes match, a group of guards resembling those from “Squid Game” were spotted amongst the spectators. This gave the commentator an opportunity to hint at the upcoming return of the series for its second season this coming winter.

Moreover, the Netflix logo was omnipresent throughout the event, appearing in shots of the iconic ring, seating arrangements, intermission graphics, and even the presenters’ cue cards. In fact, some presenters couldn’t resist making a few streaming-themed jokes, such as one who exclaimed as the show began, “It’s time to relax and enjoy, it’s Netflix and Chills!

To clarify, Netflix collaborates on their platform with numerous other brands, such as Pepsi, Celsius, DraftKings, Meta Quest, Experian, and others, showcasing prominent advertising from them all.
