Black Ops 6 removing MW3 2XP tokens is a huge slap in the face to loyal fans

As a seasoned CoD player with a decade-long history of grinding through the series, I can’t help but feel like I’ve been dealt a sour hand by Activision this time around. After the excitement of Season 1 and the promise of using my hard-earned double XP tokens from MW3 and Warzone, it felt like a sweet victory was within reach. But alas, that victory was swiftly snatched away just a day later, leaving me feeling like I’d been given a raw deal.

When Black Ops 6 Season 1 launched, players felt thrilled upon finding out they could utilize their saved double XP tokens from MW3 and Warzone. Yet, these tokens were taken away a day after, leaving diehard series followers feeling deeply disappointed.

The process of leveling up weapons in Black Ops 6 moves at a snail’s pace, something the devs have come under fire for and promptly adjusted after backlash from players. It’s in a better spot now, but it’s still a massive grind even with double XP.

However, having hundreds of hours worth of tokens dropped into your inventory was surely a sigh of relief for the type of CoD player who wants to sit down and grind out every weapon. That relief was, unfortunately, short-lived.

A day after releasing a hotfix, the developers eliminated unnecessary tokens from Black Ops 6’s multiplayer, keeping them exclusive for use in MW3 and Warzone. This move might seem like an attempt by the developers to encourage players who initially purchased BO6 at launch to switch to Warzone or revisit Modern Warfare 3.

‘Yeah, you know that new game you just bought from us? Go play something else.’

Rest assured, they considered the possibility that some players might feel unhappy with this adjustment. To make up for it, they’ve given out an award to Black Ops 6 gamers as a form of compensation.

45 minutes of complimentary double XP experience? What a kind gesture! I’m certain that the gamers, who had eagerly anticipated using their hard-earned double XP over countless hours in multiplayer, are equally ecstatic.

Additionally, right now, you’re able to enter Warzone, use a token, and even in Black Ops 6’s multiplayer, you’ll still receive double XP. However, if Activision intends to take away the tokens players have earned, this workaround might not last long as it will probably be fixed by them.

But this also proves that removing the function of tokens in multiplayer was a very purposeful and hastily implemented change to patch out the “issue” before players got to use their 2XP.

In the patch notes, it was even labelled as a bug that had to be fixed.

It appears that Treyarch has intentionally stopped the activation of old XP tokens in Black Ops 6, as there was a mistake allowing it in the game’s user interface.

The worst part is that Black Ops 6 is really, really good. It’s probably the best CoD multiplayer experience the franchise has had in years (aside from the maps). Which makes it so difficult to understand why Activision would make such a short-sighted decision for the sake of the extra retention they may earn from forcing players to spend more time grinding.

Instead of capitalizing on an unmissable public relations opportunity, they deliberately targeted their most devoted players with a decision that seemed counterproductive. Those who stand to gain the most from the abundance of extra experience points are likely the ones who will persistently play the game and purchase cosmetic items regardless.

Players’ response to this change has been quick and universally critical, as it should be. It’s my hope that those responsible for this decision will take a step back and rethink their actions, restoring the rights that belong to the players.
