As a movie lover with a penchant for action-packed holiday films, I must say that the early release of “Red One” has certainly brought a festive spark to this year’s cinematic landscape. With Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans teaming up for a Christmas adventure, it’s like receiving an early present!
With Halloween behind us, it’s now approaching the holiday season, bypassing Thanksgiving this year. And who better to welcome the festive spirit of Christmas than Dwayne Johnson, as he brings us “Red One” ahead of schedule!
The Chris Evans-starring Christmas action film produced by Amazon MGM earned $3.7 million at the box office during Thursday previews, and it’s predicted to rake in anywhere from $25 million to $40 million more. Given its massive production budget of $250 million, coupled with marketing expenses, “Red One” will need a Christmas miracle to turn a profit at the cinema. However, Amazon MGM isn’t solely reliant on box office earnings, as they aim to attract viewers to their Amazon Prime Video streaming service, where “Red One” will eventually be available.
Johnston, known for creating “Red One” through his Seven Bucks Productions, is partnering once again with Jake Kasdan, his director from “Jumanji”. They are working on a Christmas-themed action-adventure film. In this movie, Johnston portrays Callum Drift, the leader of Santa’s security team. He joins forces with the crooked bounty hunter Jack O’Malley (played by Evans) to search for Santa who has been abducted. Their cold expedition sees them fighting against snowmen with muscle, Santa’s wicked brother Krampus, the winter witch Gryla, and other frosty adversaries. The ensemble cast includes J.K. Simmons as Santa, Lucy Liu, Kiernan Shipka as Gryla, Kristofer Hivju as Krampus, Bonnie Hunt as Mrs. Claus, among others.
With no competition from other significant debuts this weekend, “Red One” is expected to easily dethrone the three-time box office champion “Venom: The Last Dance,” as well as holdovers like “Conclave,” “Heretic,” and “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.
