‘Friday Night Lights’ Reboot in the Works

As a movie reviewer with a heart full of nostalgia and a mind that cherishes great storytelling, I must admit my excitement is tingling at the prospect of a “Friday Night Lights” reboot. The original series was a beacon of quality television, with its poignant portrayal of small-town life, high school football, and the struggles of everyday people.

Clear eyes, full hearts, reboot.

Universal Television is developing a fresh installment of “Friday Night Lights,” as verified by EbMaster through their sources. The original series showrunner, Jason Katims, and executive producer Brian Grazer of Imagine Entertainment are set to return, with Kristen Zolner of Imagine also joining as an executive producer.

The upcoming project is centered around a fresh narrative involving novel characters within the high school football milieu, implying that familiar faces such as Kyle Chandler, Connie Britton, Gaius Charles, and Jesse Plemons might not reappear in this new installment.

The “Friday Night Lights” remake is still at a preliminary stage, and the studio is currently marketing it to various production companies in Hollywood.

Universal Television declined to comment.

The TV series ‘Friday Night Lights’ ran for five seasons between 2006 and 2011, initially on NBC and later on AT&T’s channel The 101 Network. It was originally based on H. G. Bissinger’s 1990 book with the same title, which had earlier been made into a 2004 film by Peter Berg, starring Billy Bob Thornton.

The television show ‘Friday Night Lights’ focuses on a high school football team situated in the fictional town of Dillon, Texas. Eric Taylor, played by Chander, coaches this team. Notable cast members include Minka Kelly, Zach Gilford, Michael B. Jordan, and Jurnee Smollett, among others. This series was produced by Universal Television, Imagine Television, and Film 44.

There’s been much talk about a potential comeback ever since the series ended, even though actors such as Britton have dismissed it.

Back in 2019, when asked if a revival of “Friday Night Lights” was happening, Britton said, “You should let it rest.” In September 2024, she told EbMaster on the Emmys red carpet, “I’ve heard they’re making another ‘Friday Night Lights,’ which seems odd to me.

Puck broke the news of the reboot in development.
