As a long-time viewer of both Young Sheldon and The Big Bang Theory, I must say that the transformation of Mary Cooper from a quirky, God-fearing, yet fun-loving mother to the stern, somewhat bitter woman we met on The Big Bang Theory has always puzzled me. However, after watching Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, I finally understand the gap between these two versions of Mary.
It seems fans have been puzzled about the transformation of Mary on Young Sheldon compared to her character in The Big Bang Theory. However, the portrayal of Georgie and Mandy’s first marriage provides a compelling connection that clarifies the evolution.
Through the conclusion of Young Sheldon’s seventh season, Mary Cooper has now become a widow. The series finale depicted her in the most vulnerable phase of mourning, which seems to have intensified further in her recent appearance on the Georgie & Mandy spinoff.
Mary briefly returned in Episode 1, resembling something closer to her past self as she helped Georgie and Mandy settle into their temporary apartment. In Episode 5, everything has changed – and she’s feeling the loss of husband George more than ever.
At first, she declines attending Thanksgiving with Georgie, stating that she must prioritize herself and disregard the holiday in order to respect her own emotions. However, as time passes, we notice a hint of bitterness towards her family before she eventually changes her mind.
This specific instance gives us insight into why she became the Mary character from The Big Bang Theory. Despite their differences, her sorrow serves as the connecting thread between them.
Previously on Young Sheldon, Mary wasn’t always pleasant, but she was never malicious. From the very beginning, she showed a deep faith in God, yet she knew how to relax and enjoy herself with her children.
Moving ahead by seven seasons, it appears as though she’s distanced herself from them significantly. Sheldon, now at Caltech, is no longer an issue for her, while Georgie seems to be focusing on his own young family. In the fifth episode, Missy exhibits rebellious behavior, eventually revealing a tattoo towards the end.
As George’s beloved first Thanksgiving approaches, Mary appears at her most exposed and potentially at her lowest point, showcasing a less favorable side of herself.
It’s clear that fans haven’t been fond of the change in her character, but now we finally have an appropriate reason given for why this transformation took place.
Mary finds it particularly poignant when Jim and Audrey engage in a certain argument, as writer Steve Holland points out, “For us, discussing Mary and the things she can’t experience – knowing she won’t have another confrontation with George, or won’t worry about his drinking again – feels like an intriguing, specific aspect of her grief to explore. This seems to resonate oddly with her.
