As a seasoned movie enthusiast with a soft spot for documentaries, I can’t help but feel a thrill running down my spine as I delve into this year’s Cinema Eye Honors nominees. The diverse array of stories, from “Sugarcane” investigating abuses within a Canadian Indigenous community to Mati Diop’s “Dahomey,” promises an enriching cinematic journey that resonates deeply with the world we live in today.
The Cinema Eye Honors, an organization that recognizes the artistic accomplishments of nonfiction and documentary filmmakers, has announced the nominees for its 18th annual awards. These awards will be presented on January 9 at the New York Academy of Medicine located in East Harlem, New York.
In the lead, “Sugarcane,” directed by Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie, earned six accolades, among them nominations for exceptional documentary feature and direction. This movie delves into the mistreatment and compulsory separations of families within a Native Canadian community.
In the category of Outstanding Nonfiction Feature and Direction, both ‘Dahomey’ (by Mati Diop) and ‘No Other Land’ (co-directed by Yuval Abraham, Basel Adra, Hamdan Ballal, and Rachel Szor) were recognized with five nominations each.
Contenders for the exceptional production category feature “Porcelain War” by Paula DuPre’ Pesman. Pesman had previously won in this category at the 3rd Cinema Eye Honors in 2010 with “The Cove.” This year, Shane Boris and Odessa Rae – winners of the outstanding production award in 2023 for “Hollywoodgate” – are up for another nomination, this time for their work on “Navalny”.
For the past decade, five recipients of the Outstanding Production category award have subsequently won the Best Documentary Feature Oscar. These victorious films are “20 Days in Mariupol”, “Navalny”, “Free Solo”, “OJ: Made in America” and “Citizenfour”.
Among the nominees chosen based on over 30,000 votes cast by the audience are “Copa 71,” “Daughters,” “Frida,” “Mountain Queen,” “Porcelain War,” “The Extraordinary Life of Ibelin,” “Skywalkers: A Tale of Love,” “Sugarcane,” “Super/Man: The Story of Christopher Reeve” and “Will and Harper.
As for the short film honorees, screenings for Cinema Eye’s 11 semi-finalists will take place Dec. 1 at DCTV in New York and Dec. 7 at Vidiots in Los Angeles. The official short film nominations will be announced Dec. 8.
