As a die-hard gaming enthusiast with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a surge of nostalgia upon hearing the news that Unreal and Unreal Tournament are now available for free on the Internet Archive. These games were integral parts of my formative years in the world of PC gaming, where their graphical prowess, fast-paced action, and multiplayer mayhem set the bar high for what was to come.
Originally developed by Epic Games using their widely acclaimed Unreal Engine, the initial versions of Unreal and Unreal Tournament – games that ignited a full-fledged FPS series – can now be downloaded and played for free on the Internet Archive. This is all with the approval of Epic Games themselves.
1998 saw the debut of Unreal, a game that, along with its multiplayer-centric sequel from 1999, made waves as first-person shooter (FPS) games and online multiplayer were gaining popularity. Following closely on the heels of Quake 2’s online multiplayer success in 1997, Unreal capitalized on this trend. Epic Games’ visually stunning and fast-paced arena shooter gave rise to numerous sequels, with the final, fully released installment being Unreal Tournament 3 in 2007.
2014 saw Epic making available a preliminary version of a new installment within their series, titled Unreal Tournament. Yet, due to the company’s concentration on Fortnite, its cash-generating battle royale sensation, the game was formally scrapped in 2018.
Thanks to the diligent efforts of a passionate fan group known as Old Unreal, these two timeless Unreal games – removed from online marketplaces in 2023 following Epic Games’ shutdown of their official servers along with other older titles like Rock Band – can now be easily accessed on contemporary PCs. All it takes is a few simple mouse clicks to download and install the games. Although there are no longer any dedicated official servers, playing online multiplayer in both games requires some extra steps. However, community servers continue to keep these shooter games active and thriving in 2024.
As a dedicated gamer, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news! Directly from Epic Games, they’ve made it clear that they aren’t blocking access to the classic Unreal games available on Archive.org. In other words, we gamers are free to find these versions, link to them, and enjoy a blast from the past!
Previously, Epic has shown leniency towards older game titles by giving away resources. In particular, they distributed approximately $12 million worth of assets from their discontinued MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) game, Paragon, in 2018. These assets were made available for creators working with the Unreal Engine to utilize, leading to the development of several games that have succeeded Paragon.
