Filmmaker Marcia Smith Tells Doc Distributors to Be ‘Courageous’ Despite Trump’s Election

As a lifelong follower of documentaries and a passionate advocate for truth-telling narratives, I find myself deeply troubled by the current state of the documentary community. The challenges we face under the current political climate are daunting, to say the least.

At the yearly DOC NYC Visionaries Honors Lunch on Wednesday, approximately 500 members of the documentary field endeavored to stay optimistic concerning the future, not just for documentaries, but also for America during Donald Trump’s administration.

At the Gotham Hall gala, held on the first day of the 15th annual DOC NYC film festival, a variety of documentary makers who are competing for a position on the Oscar shortlist gathered. Among them were R.J. Cutler (“Martha”), Alexis Bloom (“The Bibi Files”), Hasan Oswald (“Mediha”), Carla Gutiérrez (“Frida”), and Shiori Ito (“Black Box Diaries”). Additionally, the luncheon was attended by numerous documentarians, producers, editors, publicists, distributors, and a significant number of members from the Academy’s documentary branch.

In her address, Marcia Smith, president and co-founder of Firelight Media, expressed her worries about the broader documentary community as a whole.

Smith stated, “Many friends have lost their jobs, entire documentary divisions have been dismantled or merged, budgets have decreased significantly, and lucrative festival sales have been scarce. What’s most concerning is the shrinking scope of topics deemed worthy of support. In broadcast news, they say ‘If it bleeds, it leads.’ Today, for documentaries, it might be ‘If it’s a true crime, scandal, or about celebrities, it could potentially sell.’ These are the topics we’ve been discussing lately. These were our concerns in 2023 and early 2024, before the election. However, now as we ponder the future of our industry, things appear much more dire. There’s a possibility of continued shrinkage and even tighter focus on commercial priorities. But what could pose the greatest threat to our field since its inception in 1969 is public television, which, although not widely recognized, has been the largest distributor of independent documentaries.

Smith, who has contributed to numerous documentaries for Firelight such as “The Murder of Emmett Till” and “The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution,” expressed that the apprehensions within the documentary community have never felt more real or immediate.

She stated that our concerns have shifted from job stability or professional progression to genuine, physical safety. We worry about ourselves, our friends, and our neighbors. The question on everyone’s mind is who will be targeted first, and whether help will arrive when we need it. For those working in documentary production, this moment presents a particularly keen challenge, yet also a chance and responsibility. Remember, we are the ones who use images and sound to narrate authentic stories that enlighten and motivate, stories with the power to alter our perceptions of humanity in each other. We are the ones who trust that documentaries can transform the world.

Smith called on docu distribution gatekeepers to be “courageous when it feels risky.”

She urged us to advocate for the narratives and the creators whose voices are essential. She encouraged us to support innovative filmmakers and unique tales that haven’t been told before, rather than those we think audiences might prefer, as they’re often just more of the same.

Smith received a standing ovation at the end of her 12-minute acceptance speech.

At the Fellow Visionaries Tribute event, the honorees were filmmaker Alan Berliner, documentary filmmaker Lucy Walker, and Jenni Wolfson, the chief executive officer of Chicken & Egg Pictures.

The DOC NYC 2024 festival wraps up on November 21st. Live events will be held at New York City’s IFC Center, SVA Theatre, and Village East by Angelika. Moreover, the online component of the festival will continue until December 1st, allowing viewers nationwide to stream the screenings.
