Xbox Boss Says Avowed Was Delayed Due To Scheduling, Not Quality

As a seasoned gamer who’s seen his fair share of delays and disappointments, I must say, I appreciate the transparency and strategy behind the delay of Avowed. It’s refreshing to see a game delayed not because it needs more polish, but to ensure it gets the spotlight it deserves amidst a crowded holiday season.

Frequently, video games are postponed due to incomplete projects or technical problems like performance issues and game-halting glitches. However, as stated by Xbox chief Phil Spencer, Avowed isn’t among them. Instead, he delayed Obsidian’s upcoming RPG because the holiday season was too congested for their team.

In conversation with Game File (via VGC), Spencer explained that Avowed will be released in February instead of its original plan, pointing out that the Xbox platform is rich with upcoming titles such as Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Diablo 4: Vessel of Hate, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, and more. This abundance of releases during the holiday season provides Xbox with the opportunity to spread out their game launches, ensuring that Avowed gets its own spotlight in the following year.

“We didn’t move it because Obsidian needed the time,” Spencer said. “They’ll use the time.”

Working hand-in-hand with Matt Booty, head of Xbox Game Studios, I was instrumental in strategizing the release schedule and collaborating with the Game Pass squad. We agreed it was crucial to even things out a bit, so we decided to space out these releases more thoughtfully.

2025 here I come! Mark your calendars for February 18th, that’s when I’ll be diving headfirst into Avowed on PC and Xbox Series X|S. It’s going to be a gaming extravaganza, with other heavyweights like Civilization VII and Monster Hunter Wilds also joining the fray in the same month. Can’t wait!

Previously, Obsidian announced that the game Avowed will operate at 30 frames per second on Xbox Series X, delivering more vibrant graphics. The developer hints at multiple endings in Avowed, suggesting over ten different conclusions. In August, TopMob had an hour to explore the RPG and found it a blend of Skyrim and Annihilation’s elements.
