As I peruse through this extensive list of character archetypes, it’s quite evident that each one carries a unique essence, a distinct flavor if you will. Each represents a different facet of human nature, a snapshot of a life lived in its own peculiar way.

In contrast to modern versions of Square Enix’s Dragon Quest series where players have freedom to distribute stat points, the HD-2D Remake of Dragon Quest III takes us back to a period when points were assigned randomly based on a character’s “Personality”. This meant that certain stats would grow quicker or slower. Managing and strategically using these unique traits like “Daredevil” or “Gourmand” is crucial for building an effective party. However, it’s essential to remember this when taking on the new post-game bosses and content in the HD-2D remake.

Here, you’ll find an exhaustive analysis of each Character’s Personality, along with tips on how to modify their traits for optimal Stat development in the area that suits your preferences.

What the Attributes do

Before modifying the characteristics of your party members, let’s briefly clarify the functions of each stat first.

Strength: How much damage physical attacks do

Resilience: Reduces damage taken by physical attacks

Agility: Determines the order in which a character will act during combat

Stamina: How much HP a character gains when they level up

Wisdom: What is the amount of harm and recovery a character’s spells inflict, as well as the MP increase a character experiences upon leveling up.

Fortune: Influences the degree of harm inflicted by physical assaults and the probability of your character scoring a critical hit. Additionally, it determines the possibility of your character acquiring a status condition.

How to change Personalities:

Equipment:

Transforming a character’s personality can be achieved most effectively through the use of interchangeable accessories. These items, like the “Rabbit Tail” or “Garter,” have the power to alter a character’s persona as long as they are equipped. Once removed, the character will return to their original personality. To determine if an accessory has this effect, simply read its description where you will notice that the new personality’s text is slightly bolded.

Books:

Unlike adding accessories, Books (for instance, “The Eureka Moment” which bestows the Genius Personality) function as one-time use items that permanently alter a character’s personality. This means that upon using the book, not only do you lose the physical book but also to revert the character back to its original personality, you will have to find the corresponding book or an accessory that can restore it. Books are frequently discovered on bookshelves in towns and various structures.

The Personality Quiz

When you start Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, the initial quiz helps shape the Hero’s starting character traits. A sequence of questions will be presented to you, and depending on your answers, a brief storyline will follow. Your reaction within this narrative will ultimately decide the final personality assigned to the Hero.

After completing the tutorial and waking up, navigate to the menu, choose ‘Misc.’ followed by ‘Status’ to confirm that your chosen personality has been successfully assigned.
