As a seasoned adventurer who’s traversed many a treacherous terrain and vanquished countless foes, I’ve got to say that forming the perfect party for Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake is no easy feat! But after much trial and error, I’ve come to find that a Thief, Priest, and Monster Wrangler make for an unbeatable trio.
One of the initial activities you’ll undertake in the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake involves assembling your team of adventurers. Unlike many subsequent games within the series where characters automatically join your party as the story progresses, this game allows you to build your own team from the ground up. If you’ve landed on this page because you’re pondering over how to construct the ideal party, we’re here to provide some guidance.
Following a conversation with the Aliahan King and embarking on your journey, your mission will lead you to Patty’s Party Planning Place, situated on the northwest part of Aliahan. If you converse with Patty at her reception desk on the ground floor, she usually provides some pre-made characters such as a Mage, Priest, or Warrior for immediate use. However, if you wish to craft your own characters using specific names and classes, it’s best to ascend to the upper level.
Head to the upstairs NPC at Patty’s Party Planning Place to create your party.
At the desk located upstairs, you’ll find the Non-Player Character (NPC) who presents it as the Premier Adventurer Listing Services, often abbreviated as PALS. Here’s how you can create your character:
- Choose a name. You *can* change this later in the game, at Alltrades Abbey.
- Choose a class. The available classes are Warrior, Martial Artist, Mage, Priest, Merchant, Gadabout, Thief, and new-to-the-remake Monster Wrangler.
- Choose a gender. You can pick male or female for any class.
- Choose a look. Each gender/class combination has four different sprites available, so choose what you like best. You *can* change this later, at Alltrades Abbey.
- Choose a hair color. There are 14 different hair colors to pick from. You *can* change this later, also, at Alltrades Abbey.
- Choose which stats to allocate five starting skill seeds to. This will affect the Personality that the character receives. The NPC will give a quick summary of how the Personality will affect the character’s growth rates, so there’s no guessing what a Personality may mean.
- Choose a voice. There are 18 voices to choose from, 9 male and 9 female. You can pick any voice for any sprite. This only affects battle barks.
Choosing a personality is crucial because it influences how your character’s stats develop as you advance in the game. In essence, the personality determines the stats. There are numerous personalities to pick from, and the character creation NPC explains how each one impacts growth rates. Additionally, you can review details about each personality in the Traveller’s Tips section of the menu.
If you’re pondering which Personalities to choose, simply apply some good old common logic. For instance, one who fights physically might benefit from a personality that enhances Strength and Endurance, whereas a spiritual figure like a priest may find it more advantageous to concentrate on traits that increase Wisdom.
A widely-used personality for female characters is Vamp, known for its high overall stat development and versatility across different character classes. However, not all classes can acquire every personality. Moreover, various game accessories can alter your character’s personality, and there are Book items scattered throughout the game that can modify a character’s personality as well. Essentially, if you’re not satisfied with your starting Personality, you have options to adjust it later on.
To ensure a specific personality for your characters, skip over the character creation process temporarily between steps 6 and 7. This will give you an opportunity to redistribute your Skill Seeds later on. The resulting personality is somewhat random. For instance, if you aim for the Vamp personality, remember to allocate some seeds in Agility and Luck since these traits grow more significantly under the Vamp persona.
It’s important to mention that a significant amount of game equipment is exclusively for female characters. However, I didn’t find any male-specific gear. Given this and the widespread preference for the female Vamp character, I opted to assemble an all-female party.
Dragon Quest III HD-2D Best Classes
So what classes should you pick? First let’s give a quick overview.
Battle Champion: This is a class specialized in both tanking and dealing damage. They boast substantial power and endurance, albeit with limited capacity for self-healing. A timelessly essential member of any team.
Class Feature: This class excels in swiftness and fortune. It allows for quick actions and is proficient in landing critical blows.
Mage: A magic damage-dealing class with plenty of buff spells.
Priest Class: This class is primarily concerned with healing and boosting, but it also has the capability to deal damage using its Swoosh skills.
Character Class: This class isn’t designed for combat, but offers a variety of support skills in the field, such as Service Call which summons an Inn, Priest, or shop. The skill Call to Arms can bring powerful mercenaries at a cost, and it can be quite beneficial for end-game bosses when you have excess wealth. However, this class is most effective as a temporary choice before moving on to another class.
Gadabout: Unlike certain previous editions of Dragon Quest III, these characters, known as Gadabouts, can freely employ specific abilities on their own accord. They acquire healing and light-damage techniques, but what stands out is their ability to amplify their next physical or magical strike for the following turn, along with some supportive skills. However, due to their independent nature, Gadabouts may squander turns occasionally. Notably, they can advance into a Sage class without a unique item. While useful, it’s suggested that Gadabouts serve as a temporary stage before progressing to another class.
Thief: This utility class might not be strong in combat, but it offers assistance in various aspects. Padfoot reduces the frequency of encounters, while Nose For Treasure and Snoop aid in discovering treasures on the map. In battle, they can inflict multiple status effects, and Assassn’s Stab could potentially deal a single lethal blow to an enemy.
Monster Tamer: In the HD-2D remake, Monster Tamers will acquire new powers when they encounter Friendly Creatures globally. Towards the end of the game, if you manage to amass monsters, these creatures can become your primary sources of damage output consistently. I highly suggest having a Monster Tamer in your team for the HD-2D remake. Their healing skills are unaffected by spell-blocking effects, making them particularly handy in emergency situations.
At Patty’s Party Planning Place, Sage isn’t a character you can directly hire. This unique class can only be obtained by promoting a character at Alltrades Abbey during gameplay. Sages possess a variety of magical abilities such as healing, attacking, and boosting. To promote a character to Sage, they must first reach level 20, with the exception being Gadabouts. It’s advisable to transform a Priest or Mage into a Sage when they are ready for promotion, taking advantage of their existing abilities in magic.
In the game, you have the option to switch classes for any character who isn’t a Hero. This is not an immediate feature in Aliahan, but it becomes available at a later location known as Alltrades Abbey. Essentially, you can swap one class for another (excluding Sage), but this action will reduce your character’s stats by half and reset their level to 1. However, they’ll keep all the skills from their old class, and their initial level 1 stats will be stronger than those of a freshly created level 1 character. In other words, transforming a character into a new class will make them more potent or versatile over time.
The Hero’s class is fixed, meaning you won’t need to worry about changing it, which simplifies character management for you.
Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake Best Party Recommendation
Based on the descriptions above, my recommended party for starters is Thief, Monster Wrangler, and Priest.
- Thief will be your least useful unit in battle, but they will still able to apply some status effects with Sleepy Slap and Hypnowhip. They may also get lucky in landing a OHKO on a Metal Slime with Assassin’s Stab. Thieves are most useful for Padfoot – which reduces encounter rate, Nose for Treasure – which lists how many hidden items are in an area, as well as Snoop, which highlights hidden items with a sparkle.
- If you don’t care about Thieve’s utility in finding items / mini medals around the world, feel free to swap them out with a Warrior, who will be more useful in battle.
- Priest will be your primary healer, status effect remover, and buffer, while also being able to deal some offense when needed with Swoosh/Kaswoosh. While the Hero can do some healing on their own, a Priest is a slam dunk choice for your party, leaving your Hero to spend their turns dealing damage, only healing as a backup when necessary.
- Monster Wrangler will start out a little plain, but having one in your party will make finding the game’s Friendly Monsters a trivial task, as all monsters will join you as soon as you find them. If you don’t have a Monster Wrangler on you, Friendly Monsters can still be recruited, but may flee on sight, requiring a little more effect to obtain. The skills you get for finding monsters are worth it in the end. Wild Side lets you act twice per turn for several turns, while Monster Pile-On is a very consistent damage-dealing attack (Wild Side + Monster Pile-on is a very potent combination). Plus, Soothing Song and Emergency Groom are useful in dungeons like the Pyramid, where your Priest won’t be able to heal.
In the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, I hosted a group where each character possessed the Vamp personality. This dynamic crew consisted of a female Hero, a female Thief, a female Priest, and a female Monster Wrangler – all of them, Vamps.
A Final Note
If you’re a fan of unlocking achievements, you might have come across the ‘Able Conjurer’ title, which is awarded when you master all spells and abilities within the game. Translated simply, this entails that you need to develop each class, as you must acquire every ability for this achievement.
With my initial team consisting of a Thief, a Priest, and a Monster Wrangler, I progressed along these skill development paths. It’s important to note that once chosen, your character cannot switch classes.
- Thief –> Merchant –> Warrior
- Priest –> Gadabaout –> Sage
- Monster Wrangler -> Mage –> Martial Artist
While there might be other methods for mastering all nine non-Hero classes, this route offers a streamlined approach that ensures you’re well-prepared in every aspect. Your Warrior, after following this path, will boast the utility skills of both Thieves and Merchants, making them formidable fighters. The Sage you create will possess almost every spell in the game and can leverage Gadabout skills for self-enhancement. Lastly, your Martial Artist will be exceptionally agile, capable of either enhancing your party or dealing damage using Monster abilities.
