The Rock’s newest movie is competing with Borderlands for biggest flop of 2024

As a seasoned gamer and movie enthusiast who has seen his fair share of flops, I must say that the year 2024 seems to be turning into a blockbuster disaster for Hollywood. First came Borderlands, a film that was met with disappointment and dismay by fans and critics alike, and now we have Red One, which is seemingly on track to surpass it as the biggest flop of the year.

Dwayne Johnson’s latest film, titled “Red One,” is not performing well in cinemas, and it’s currently competing with Borderlands to become the biggest box office bomb of 2024.

Despite high expectations for the Borderlands movie due to numerous delays, the much-hyped film failed to make a big impact, more like a quiet whimper rather than a loud bang. Critics and fans alike often described it as the “least favorite movie of the year,” largely because of its significant departures from the original source material.

Due to this, its theater run wasn’t particularly lengthy, earning only $33 million in total revenue, which is significantly less than its reported production cost of $115 million. Yet, it may not be the flop with the highest gross earnings for the year.

Warner Bros.’ upcoming Christmas movie Red One, set for release in 2024, is quickly gaining momentum. Featuring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Chris Evans, J. K. Simmons, and Lucy Liu, this film was initially planned to launch a new series of Christmas films. However, if the box office numbers from its opening weekend are any clue, there might be talks about ending that potential franchise.

According to reports, Red One could potentially make between $25 million and $40 million during its debut weekend, which is similar to the overall box office revenue of Borderlands. However, considering the bigger picture, this potential income suggests a challenging financial situation.

The production cost of Red One exceeds $250 million, making it significantly higher than Borderlands’ budget. Moreover, promotional expenses are not included in this figure. If it doesn’t gain momentum within the next week, the potential losses could reach hundreds of millions.

It’s worth noting, initial figures come from 4,032 cinemas across North America. Worldwide, the film has hit 25,195 screens but only amassed $28 million thus far, according to reports.

With a Rotten Tomatoes rating of only 37%, the movie titled Red One faces a challenging journey to eventually appear on streaming services, probably around the holiday season.
