‘Cocomelon’ Producer Moonbug Hit With Small Round of Layoffs (EXCLUSIVE)

As a long-time movie buff with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a tinge of sadness as I read about Moonbug‘s recent layoffs. The entertainment industry is notorious for its ebbs and flows, and it seems that even the mighty Cocomelon machine isn’t immune to these ups and downs.

Moonbug, the creator of popular family content like “Cocomelon” on Netflix, has carried out some job reductions recently.

Approximately 4-5% of the company is projected to experience changes, primarily affecting positions in Los Angeles and London. Another report indicates that the majority of job reductions will impact in-house writers working on series and content within the company. It’s been suggested that the organization may transition towards a freelance approach for these roles moving forward.

In our preparations for 2025 and beyond, we’re modifying our studio team structure to ensure we can adapt swiftly in various production areas. This adjustment may affect a limited number of positions in London and LA. We greatly appreciate the work these employees have done, and we wish them only the very best as they move forward.

In the year 2021, Moonbug got purchased by Candle Media, a business venture owned by Tom Stagg and Kevin Mayer. This company also owns shares in Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine and Exile Content Studios.

Under the leadership of Rene Rechtman, Moonbug’s content was the most-watched licensed material on Netflix during the first half of 2024, amassing a total of 124.5 million views. Furthermore, the two seasons of the Netflix original spinoff “CoComelon Lane,” produced by Moonbug, accumulated 34.4 million views in this timeframe. Another spinoff titled “Little Angel” gained 52.4 million views across its five volumes on the platform.

Besides owning popular YouTube channels due to their IP, Moonbug is also the creative force behind shows such as “Blippi,” “Mia’s Magical Playground,” and “My Magic Pet Morphie.
