As a seasoned cinephile who has witnessed the evolution of Hollywood over the decades, I find Sydney Sweeney‘s words both poignant and thought-provoking. It is disheartening to see instances like this, where successful women in the industry undermine their peers instead of lifting each other up.
Earlier this year, Sydney Sweeney was unexpectedly thrust into headlines following criticisms from veteran Hollywood producer Carol Baum, who deemed Sweeney as “not pretty” and lacking acting skills. Moreover, Baum criticized Sweeney’s popular romantic comedy “Anyone but You” as “unwatchable.” At the time, a representative for Sweeney strongly rebuked Baum’s remarks, labeling it as inappropriate to attack another woman. Now, Sweeney herself has spoken out on this matter in a recent interview with Vanity Fair.
It’s truly disappointing to witness women undermining other women, particularly when accomplished females in their field observe promising young talent striving tirelessly to fulfill their aspirations, only to then attempt to belittle and discredit their work. Sweeney expressed this sentiment, stating that the entire industry is supposed to be about ‘women empowering other women.’ However, he noted that this ideal is far from reality; instead, it seems like a facade for all the negative things they say about others when no one is watching.
She went on, “There are countless studies and varied perspectives about the root cause of this issue. It seems we’ve been conditioned for generations to think that only one woman can achieve success, secure a man, or hold any significant position. This mindset creates competition among women, making them feel they must either fight each other or undermine the successful one. I’m still working it out, trying to understand. I’m just doing my best here. Why am I being criticized instead of supported?
In a conversation held in Pleasantville, NY, veteran Hollywood producer and executive, Baum, who has worked on movies such as “Dead Ringers,” “Father of the Bride,” and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” made critical remarks about Sweeney. This discussion took place with New York Times film critic Janet Maslin.
Baum expressed during our chat, “I find Sydney Sweeney puzzling. I posed a question to my students, ‘Can someone clarify this woman for me? She’s not traditionally beautiful, and her acting skills seem questionable. Yet, she’s incredibly popular. No one seems to know why.’ And they didn’t have an answer.
As a film enthusiast, I was disheartened to see a fellow woman in our industry resorting to criticism rather than sharing her knowledge and expertise. It’s unfortunate when someone in a position of influence decides to attack another woman instead of uplifting each other. If this is the approach she’s advocating and teaching to her students, it’s truly disappointing. To unfairly belittle a fellow female producer says a lot about Ms. Baum’s character.
