Inevitable Foundation Unveils Inaugural Visionary Fellowship Honorees

As a follower with a deep appreciation for inclusivity and representation in media, I am thrilled to see the inaugural class of Inevitable Foundation‘s Visionary Fellowship. Hailing from diverse backgrounds, each recipient brings a unique perspective that will undoubtedly enrich our collective cinematic landscape.

As a cinephile myself, I’m thrilled to share that The Inevitable Foundation has introduced the first batch of Visionary Fellowship honorees. This year-long program offers financial support, community connections, and expert guidance to budding filmmakers with disabilities, enabling them to craft a short film which could one day become their debut feature. Among this inspiring group are Zayre Ferrer, Monica Lucas, Filipe Coutinho, Alys Murray, and Katherine Craft. Their stories will undoubtedly enrich the world of cinema.

Richie Siegel and Marisa Torelli-Pedevska, co-founders of Inevitable Foundation, announced with great excitement the selection of our extraordinary Visionary Fellows for the first group of participants. By backing these talented disabled writer-directors, we’re broadening our platform for disabled artists, aligning with our mission to empower them and help them attain influential roles in the industry. We eagerly look forward to sharing their stories globally.

As a cinephile, I’m thrilled at the prospect of being recognized by The Fellowship! If I’m fortunate enough to be one of their recipients, I stand to gain a substantial $55,000 funding for my short film, not just money, but also a production grant, access to an experienced crew that knows their stuff, health insurance, marketing support to help get my work seen by the right people, and financial aid for any necessary travel or access needs. It’s like having a dream team backing me up on this creative journey!

Established in 2021, the Inevitable Foundation has provided assistance to numerous filmmakers with disabilities through a variety of initiatives such as the Accelerate Fellowship, Elevate Collective, Elevate for Podcasters, and its Emergency Relief Fund.

The Visionary Fellowship is solely funded by Netflix’s Fund for Creative Equity, a program that nurtures emerging filmmakers to secure roles in Netflix’s own production teams.

Filipe Coutinho (he/him) is a writer and filmmaker living with OCD who has a passion for character-driven, inclusive, and commercial stories. He has been featured on The Black List for the last three consecutive years for his projects “Whittier,” “Jambusters,” and “Patsy,” and the latter two are currently in pre-production. Filipe is a member of Inevitable Foundation’s Elevate Collective, a Black List Feature Lab alum, and a two-time finalist of the Nicholl’s Fellowship. His unique cultural perspective is highlighted by his background; Filipe emigrated from a small town in Portugal and knows intimately the challenges of being an immigrant in America. He is repped by Matt Rosen at RAIN management.

At the Visionary Fellowship, Filipe will be crafting his full-length film titled “8- Tracks.” This movie narrates the story of a 30-year-old who has experienced heartbreak, vividly retelling two pivotal relationships using eight melodies that encapsulate their journey, incorporating a hint of magical realism.

Katherine Craft (she/her), a resident filmmaker and educator hailing from Austin, Texas who often moves swiftly, even when unsure of her destination, focuses on crafting character-driven comedies and unconventional horror that delve into intricate social matters through humor, gore, high-speed car chases, and explosions. Her latest work is the upcoming Audible Original “Shaky,” a nine-episode comedy series slated for release in 2025. Prior to this, she penned for Apple TV+ series “Best Foot Forward” and developed the Snap Original series “Kappa Crypto.” She is managed by Ava Jamshidi at Industry Entertainment.

At the Visionary Fellowship, Katherine will work on her movie titled “The Hog Queen.” During the yearly Hog Fest in a small Texas town, a band of queer and disabled friends find themselves in a life-or-death struggle when they are pursued by a right-wing militia in the woods. This chase occurs after their local gay bar is assaulted during the drag show for the Hog Queen competition.

Born in Panama and raised in Brooklyn, Zayre Ferrer (they/them) is a multi-talented writer-producer. With Master of Fine Arts degrees in Dramatic Writing and Musical Theatre Writing from NYU, they have garnered accolades such as the Yip Harburg Lyricist Award, Elphaba Thropp Fellowship, and received a Peabody nomination. Their creative prowess led to the creation of the Netflix Original Series “Tijuana” and contributions to HBO Max’s “Our Flag Means Death.” They are represented by prestigious agencies including CAA, 3Arts, and Granderson Des Rochers.

At the Visionary Fellowship, Zayre will create their movie titled “Bembe.” This film narrates the journey of a Merengue bandleader who lacks a band but navigates the thriving Latin Music scene of 1980s New York City. Through this experience, they learn the difficult lesson that success often requires help from others.

Monica Lucas (she/her) hails from Los Angeles and specializes in scriptwriting for film and television. She crafts authentic narratives focusing on complex female-led relationships and intricate power struggles. Previously, she served as an assistant on shows for Netflix and Amazon, and as a Production Assistant on various independent feature films and shorts.

At the Visionary Fellowship, Monica will create her full-length movie titled “Double Birthday Christmas Wedding.” This film centers around twin sisters, Gina and Victoria, who were born on Christmas Day and have a strong bond, almost like they’re conjoined at the hip. When the privileged Victoria announces her engagement and plans for a Christmas wedding, struggling Gina feels left out and two rival Christmas weddings unfold as each sister tries to outshine the other.

Alys Murray (she/her) writes genre fare for the romantic in all of us. A graduate of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and King’s College London, she’s published three internationally best-selling novels, and has written for Hallmark, Lifetime, ViacomCBS, Passionflix, and British television. She is a proud member of Inevitable Foundation’s Elevate Collective, and alum of Disability Belongs and The Orchard Project x Sony’s Homegrown Development Lab. She is represented by Maggie Cooper at Aevitas Creative and by Matt Felker and Norris Brooks at CAA.

At the Visionary Fellowship, Alys will work on her movie project titled “Happy New Fear.” This film revolves around a young woman who goes back to her quaint town, only to find it has been mysteriously transformed into a perfect Christmas movie setting. However, she is not just a spectator; she becomes the new star of this magical town. Yet, such potent magic doesn’t come without consequences. The cheerful holiday atmosphere gradually morphs into a malevolent and demonic struggle for her survival.
