“We’re Not Going to Like Her.” Monica's Story in the First Episode of Friends Was So Controversial for the Network That a Questionnaire Called the Character “Harlot”

As a seasoned gamer of pop culture trivia, I can’t help but marvel at the behind-the-scenes drama that unfolded during the creation of Friends. The story of the NBC director objecting to Monica’s character arc is a testament to the power of creative vision and the resilience of great storytelling.

The popular sitcom “Friends” is widely considered a television masterpiece by its enthusiasts. While many viewers feel that no changes should be made to this production, the initial perspective of the director from NBC, unfortunately, didn’t align with that, as they were initially not fond of the initial storyline for Monica in the sitcom.

In an interview with The Times, David Crane – one of the creators of the popular series “Friends” – discussed a time when a director at NBC opposed Monica’s storyline. This director contended that if Monica spent the night with a man following their first date, it could lead to misinterpretation among viewers. According to Crane, this director attempted to sway audience perception during the dress rehearsal by conducting a poll among them, as reported by TVLine.

The guy who was in charge [an NBC executive] said: ‘We’re not going to like Monica because [in the pilot] she sleeps with a guy on the first date.’ We made the argument that it makes her sympathetic.

During our dress rehearsal, the network aimed to demonstrate that audiences might find Monica unappealing if she slept with a man on their first date by distributing a biased survey. The question posed was something along the lines of: ‘If Monica sleeps with a guy on her first date, is she A) promiscuous or B) a prostitute?’ It’s clear that this survey was unfairly slanted in its portrayal of Monica.

In Crane’s story, it appears that many viewers expressed a positive attitude towards Monica’s character, contrary to the assumption suggested by the questionnaire.

In their own creative approach, the makers of Friends emphasized Monica’s narrative in a way that resonated with them. This choice proved effective, as Courteney Cox’s character evolved into a vital component of the group and captured the audience’s empathy by serving as the glue that connected all the friends to one another.
