Buffalo 8 Acquires North American Rights to ‘Disfluency’ From Exec Producer Jim Cummings (EXCLUSIVE)

As a survivor and advocate, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of pride as I witness the journey of “Disfluency” from a labor of love to a beacon of hope for audiences across North America. Anna Baumgarten’s feature directorial debut is not just a film; it’s a testament to resilience, a love letter to home, and a rallying cry for survivors everywhere.

Buffalo 8 has obtained all North American rights for the upcoming coming-of-age drama titled “Disfluency.” The movie is set to premiere in cinemas on January 10th, 2025, with a digital version becoming available on January 24th, 2025.

The film titled “Disfluency” has been successful on the film festival circuit, receiving no less than nine awards for Best Narrative Feature from various juries (notably at the Austin Film Festival). Furthermore, it was also honored with the awards for Best Actress and Best Screenplay at the Newport Beach Film Festival.

The movie is executive produced by the director behind “Thunder Road” and “Last Stop in Yuma County,” Jim Cummings, and features Libe Barer from “Sneaky Pete”, Ariela Barer from “How to Blow Up a Pipeline”, Chelsea Alden from “13 Reasons Why”, and Dylan Arnold from “Oppenheimer”.

The movie traces Jane’s (Barer) return to her small town after an unforeseen flunk in her last college exam. With the aid of her friends, relatives, and a nostalgic lake summer, Jane confronts the past events that disrupted her senior year. Alongside Barer, Travis Tope (“American Vandal”), Kimiko Singer, Ricky Wayne, Diana DeLaCruz, Wayne David Parker, and Molly Hagan are part of the cast.

Anna Baumgarten’s movie ‘Disfluency’ was created at the initial Short to Feature Lab, a joint venture founded by Cummings and Ben Wiessner, who is Vice President of Sales & Distribution at Vanishing Angle. The film received the Duplass Brothers’ Hometown Heroes “Oh Shit!” Grant and was showcased at the 10th U.S. in Progress industry event in Wroclaw, Poland. This movie serves as Baumgarten’s first full-length directorial work. It is based on a short film of the same name from 2018, which was directed by Laura Holliday and written and produced by Baumgarten herself.

The deal for “Disfluency” was handled by Nikki Stier Justice, who heads distribution at Buffalo 8. She explains that this film explores the profound effects of trauma through raw honesty, remarkable performances, and mesmerizing cinematography, offering a deeply emotional portrayal of a young woman’s quest to regain control over her disrupted life.

The film “Disfluency” is a collaborative effort, produced by Danny Mooney under the New Moon Flicks banner, Baumgarten under Cedar Swing Productions, and Elaine Hastings Edell, working together with Vanishing Angle and Chicago Media Angels. Barer, Benjamin Wiessner, Jim Cummings, Alex Rudolph, Ted Reilly, Kelly Waller, and Mark Glassgow serve as executive producers, while Matthew Helderman, Luke Taylor, and Nikki Stier Justice join from Buffalo 8 in their executive producer roles.

Disfluency holds a special place in my heart, including being a tribute to my hometown in Michigan. I’ve been privileged to collaborate with an exceptional team of actors and crew members, and I owe a debt of gratitude to Nikki and the Buffalo 8 team for their outstanding collaboration. We eagerly anticipate audiences connecting with Jane’s poignant and endearing story,” stated Baumgarten.

Baumgarten has been an integral part of the development team at Pie Town Productions, Monami Entertainment (led by Mona Scott-Young), and Superjacket Productions owned by Rob Dyrdek. These collaborations have led to the creation of unscripted content for various networks including MTV, Nickelodeon, VH1, WeTV, BET, CMT, and HGTV. In 2023, Baumgarten was chosen for the Eastern Oregon Filmmaker Residency, where she began development on her next feature film.

As a champion for survival, advocacy, and education, Baumgarten journeys to various universities to exhibit the film “Disfluency”, igniting conversations centered around the prevention of sexual assault and dating violence.
