As a seasoned resident of East Orange, New Jersey, I’ve seen my fair share of trends come and go. But the latest TikTok challenge, the door-kicking fad, has taken things to a whole new level of absurdity and potential danger.

Residents of New Jersey have faced significant property damage costs, estimated in the hundreds of dollars, due to a TikTok trend that authorities consider potentially lethal.

On TikTok, it’s not unusual to see popular memes spread quickly, often in the form of “challenges”. These challenges may involve displays of physical power or agility, but they can sometimes lead to significant problems.

It’s common to witness various unfortunate outcomes such as being canceled online, high-speed police pursuits, and even hospitalizations due to accidents. Participating in a TikTok challenge often results in self-harm or harming one’s reputation, but most people draw a clear line at challenges that cause harm to others or damage their property.

The TikTok “door-kicking” trend has sparked debate due to several homeowners in New Jersey facing expensive repairs as a result. Local officials have even cautioned participants, expressing concern over potential tragic outcomes.

I’ve been hearing about this intriguing trend called the “door-kicking challenge.” Instead of the traditional ring-and-run trick like ding-dong ditch, it involves approaching someone’s house and giving their door a powerful kick! Apparently, this has become quite popular and unfortunately, it’s been causing damage to homes, as reported by ABC7 in East Orange, New Jersey. Residents in the area have suffered from a series of door-kicking incidents.

A resident from the affected home expressed, ‘Spending an additional $700 just because it was a test… What kind of test was this? To give us a fright? That’s quite pitiful,'” with local police cautioning about similar incidents happening nearby.

A police representative clarified that the ‘door-kicking challenge’ isn’t simply an innocent fad. The videos circulating on TikTok indicate that this challenge is being carried out in various cities nationwide, and it involves risky behavior that can result in substantial property damage and physical harm.

For both our residents and homeowners, it’s important to understand that this activity can cause fear. However, for those partaking, it carries a significant risk – even potentially fatal consequences. In fact, back in 2021 when the phenomenon gained traction online, Jennifer Pritchard of the Petaluma Police Department in California emphasized that it could lead to “a life-threatening or deadly situation.

She clarified, “There are many methods they might use to ensure safety, some of which could be extremely dangerous.” She added, “When someone feels their home or loved ones are under threat, they’ll respond with equal force to safeguard what they hold dear.
