As a seasoned moviegoer with decades of cinema under my belt, I must admit that the upcoming release of “Red One” has me feeling somewhat skeptical. With a budget of $250 million and mixed predictions for its box office performance, it seems like quite the gamble. The film’s international debut didn’t exactly set the world on fire, with just $26.6 million in earnings.
Will the Christmas action-comedy titled “Red One,” starring Dwayne Johnson as Santa’s head of security, yield a prosperous turnout at cinemas?
The Amazon MGM movie is aiming to make between $30 million and $35 million during its initial weekend at 4,032 theaters. Various independent forecasts show that “Red One” might bring in as low as $25 million or as high as $40 million on its opening weekend.
As a passionate cinephile, I can’t help but express my anticipation towards the upcoming holiday movie “Red One”. While ticket sales on the higher end would be satisfactory for an original film, the production cost of this blockbuster stands at a staggering $250 million, considering global marketing expenses. This means that positive word-of-mouth will be crucial to ensure its longevity in cinemas and validate its substantial investment.
In simple terms, “Red One” started its run at the international box office earning just $26.6 million from over 25,000 screens in 75 different countries. Warner Bros. is releasing the film internationally under an agreement with Amazon MGM.
The movie “Red One” (directed by Jake Kasdan, who also did “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle”) starts with the abduction of Saint Nick (played by J.K. Simmons). This event sets off a rescue operation led by a grumpy North Pole guard (Dwayne Johnson) and a bounty hunter (Chris Evans). Critics have been unimpressed with this film, as it only managed to garner a 30% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In his review, the chief film critic for EbMaster’s, Owen Gleiberman, stated that the movie lacks genuine holiday cheer, saying “I’m not certain if there has ever been a Hollywood film that kicked off the season with less Christmas spirit.
This coming weekend, “Red One” is expected to take the number one spot at the U.S. box office, surpassing the three-time reigning champion, “Venom: The Last Dance.” Currently, Sony’s sequel of the comic book series has been leading the pack this week with earnings of $15.9 million and a domestic total of $114 million, along with a global gross of $393 million so far. Other notable films continuing their run include the drama “Conclave” from Focus Features, Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s “The Wild Robot,” A24’s horror thriller “Heretic,” and Lionsgate’s faith-based production “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.
Following a lackluster October and a slow beginning to November, the total box office earnings are currently falling by approximately 11% compared to 2023 and 27% compared to 2019, as reported by Comscore. However, attendance is anticipated to increase around Thanksgiving, when three potential blockbusters — “Wicked”, “Gladiator II” and “Moana 2” — are scheduled to hit the big screen. These films may provide much-needed boosts for movie theater owners, hopefully making it a season they’ll be grateful for.
