As a long-time connoisseur of the macabre and the bizarre, who’s spent countless hours navigating the twisted labyrinths of Silent Hill, I can say with absolute certainty that Pyramid Head is no mere figment of our imagination. The recent confirmation from none other than the game’s art director Masahiro Ito himself has sent ripples through the gaming community, confirming what many had suspected for years – the Red Pyramid Thing does indeed exist in Silent Hill’s grim reality.
In the chilling world of Silent Hill, Pyramid Head 2 stands out as one of the most iconic and enduring monsters, not just in the series but across all horror media. Yet, he remains a shrouded enigma with many unresolved questions about his presence and numerous theories circulating. However, a recent revelation by Silent Hill 2‘s art director Masahiro Ito has confirmed one of those speculations: Pyramid Head is indeed a genuine entity within the Silent Hill universe, existing beyond James’ hallucinations.
Is Pyramid Head Real In Silent Hill 2?
What’s the explanation behind the theory that “Pyramid Head” is genuine, now that it has been confirmed as canon? And how did this theory originate? In Silent Hill 2, towards the end of the game, James Sunderland encounters a painting at the Silent Hill Historical Society. This painting depicts the “Red Pyramid Entity” that had been following him throughout the town. Since much of James’ experience in Silent Hill is influenced by his psychological state, many fans hypothesized that this image was a creation or manipulation of his mind.
Well, there were folks who disagreed with me on this one. They believed that the chilling image James encountered wasn’t a new sighting during our recent gameplay session in Silent Hill, but rather something he had seen during an earlier trip with his wife, Mary Sunderland. The haunting photo, they suggested, was the catalyst for the identical creature to emerge, causing a chill down my spine.
As a gamer, I’ve been pondering this game trivia for quite some time now. So, I decided to reach out to the art director of SH2, Masahiro Ito, and ask him this burning question: “Is the painting in the Historical Society from the game an exact replica of what James saw during his vacation with Mary at the SH, or is it a twisted reflection of his mind’s interpretation?
He responded: “Absolutely the former. Coz it exists in the real in the game.”
Absolutely the former. Coz it exists in the real in the game.

It’s quite plausible that the picture of Pyramid Head which James encounters at the Historical Society represents an actual historical executioner from Silent Hill in the past. However, it’s important to note that the version of Pyramid Head experienced by James is a manifestation of his own guilt and psychological state; this interpretation does not necessarily mean that Pyramid Head exists objectively outside of James’ delusions.
Although there are some inconsistencies in the theory that Pyramid Head is real, one fan noted that Alex Shepherd also encounters Pyramid Head in Silent Hill: Homecoming, implying that Alex would have also seen the painting if it existed. Ito, who wasn’t involved in SH: Homecoming, suggested that for the story to make sense, they should have shown or explained that the protagonist saw the painting.
Instead of having the protagonist not see the painting in SH:HC, it would have been more engaging if they had shown or explained a scene where the character encountered the artwork.

If an individual presents a more detailed portrayal of the protagonist’s relationship with Pyramid Head in their stories (be it games or films) than what was originally shown in SH2, I would be open to adopting that depiction. However, I haven’t come across such interpretations before.
Ito’s comments shed light on long-standing fan theories about Silent Hill 2 and offer some insights into Pyramid Head’s background. However, it’s not just that mystery that’s been unveiled; fans have also managed to solve the photo puzzle in the remake, revealing a hidden message from Blooober Team.
