As I delve into the world of cinema, I find myself captivated by the enchanting allure of “In All My Journeys I Am Returning.” The film’s premise, with its rich historical backdrop and intriguing narrative, immediately piqued my interest. However, it is the artistic choices made by the director, Manuel Ponce de León, that truly set this production apart.
Chakalaka Films, a production company based in France, has teamed up with Los Niños Films from Colombia on the forthcoming period drama “In All My Journeys I Am Returning” (“Todos mis viajes son viajes de regreso”). This project is slated to appear at Ventana Sur’s main showcase for Latin American fiction films in post-production, Primer Corte.
Prior to the film’s screening at Ventana Sur, its producers have also announced some of the main cast members. These include Camila Bejarano Wahlgren from “The Sandhamn Murders”, Frederik Lundin from “The Hypnosis”, Denis Lavant known for “Holy Motors”, and Carlos Mario Echeverry from “2091”.
19th-century Colombia serves as the backdrop for this film, where we follow Karl and Petronella, a Swedish duo seeking wealth in South America. After navigating through barren lands following the independence struggle, they get disoriented and find themselves lost during an extended river voyage. Instead of striking it rich, they discover within themselves a longing for the past and the specter of unfamiliarity.
The movie’s various design decisions, such as its aspect ratio, abundant visual distortions, and gritty texture, contribute to a vintage appearance, making it seem as if you’re viewing a piece of history, much like old archive material.
Manuel Ponce de León’s first directorial venture is titled ‘In All My Journeys.’ He collaborated on the screenplay with César Jaimes and Jerónimo Uribe. The director’s 2021 short film, ‘Beyond the Night,’ received a special mention at the Marseille Festival of Documentary Film. Financially supported by the 2022 Malaga WIP and Malaga Festival Funds & Co-Production, as well as the 2023 FDC Proimagenes Colombia Production Award, this project is its current form.
During our conversation with EbMaster, the filmmaker shared that the journey served as the main focus of their project,” he explained. “This journey can be literal or symbolic; it’s a crucial aspect of human existence, acting as a doorway to creativity and self-discovery. The topic of migration became a significant part of our story, an unavoidable step towards otherness. ‘In All My Journeys I am Returning’ is a film that explores the human desire to imagine, to regain a life that was once lost or yearned for in the future, or one that might never materialize. This movie seeks to capture the thrilling ride of a train that appears to journey back to nothingness.
This year’s Ventana Sur takes place in Montevideo, Uruguay, over Dec. 2-6.
