As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation at the potential shift within the Disney empire. The name Andrew Wilson, EA’s current CEO, being tossed around as a possible successor to Bob Iger has sparked quite a stir in gaming circles.
Currently, Disney is exploring potential replacements for their long-standing CEO, Bob Iger, and it’s rumored that Andrew Wilson from EA could be among the contenders for the position.
The Wall Street Journal reports that Disney is considering potential new hires from outside the company, and names such as Wilson, Dana Walden (Disney Entertainment co-chairman), Josh D’Amaro (Disney parks chairman), Jimmy Pitaro (ESPN chairman), and Alan Bergman (Disney Entertainment co-chairman) have been mentioned alongside Disney in these discussions.
As a devoted enthusiast, I can’t help but marvel at the deep-rooted bond between Electronic Arts (EA) and Disney. Over the years, EA’s Star Wars video games have been a phenomenal success, with a staggering 52 million copies sold and generating an astounding $3 billion in revenue collectively. And guess what? The partnership doesn’t end there! EA is currently hard at work, crafting fresh Star Wars and Marvel adventures. We’re talking about a new Star Wars Jedi trilogy game, as well as titles featuring Iron Man and Black Panther! The force – or should I say, the fun – is strong with these upcoming releases!
Wilson has been associated with EA for quite some time, holding the positions of CEO since 2013 and chairman since 2021. He was close to becoming ESPN’s chairman in 2018, but the role went to Pitaro instead. It was also rumored that Disney was contemplating the acquisition of EA during Bob Chapek’s tenure as CEO. The competition to succeed Iger arises amidst a string of scandals concerning the current CEO.
Disney’s earnings from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars franchises at the box office have reached astronomical figures, yet the company has faced criticism for overemphasizing sequels rather than original content. Actress Tatiana Maslany, who stars in She-Hulk, recently criticized Disney as being “out of touch” with their workers during the 2023 SAG-AFTRA and Writers Guild of America strike.
From 2005 to 2020, Iger held the CEO position at Disney, and afterwards, he acted as an advisor for Chapek who succeeded him. In November 2022, Iger resumed his role as CEO once more, a post he’ll maintain until his contract ends in 2026.
