As a seasoned gamer who has witnessed the evolution of gaming giants since the days of pixelated glory, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation and admiration for Sega’s ambitious endeavors under the guidance of Justin Scarpone. With 17 years at Disney, the man has seen the magic of storytelling across various media platforms, and now he’s bringing that vision to the world of gaming – a realm I hold dear.

In recent years, Sega has made significant strides in Hollywood with its projects like Sonic the Hedgehog 3 sequel, Shinobi movie, and Like a Dragon series on Prime Video. Yet, Sega aims to emulate media powerhouses such as Disney, and a former Disney executive is working towards realizing this vision.

Following a 17-year tenure at Disney, Justin Scarpone was recently appointed as Sega’s global head of transmedia this year. In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Scarpone pointed out that many video game companies haven’t emulated the strategies used by Disney and Marvel in expanding their properties across various media platforms. However, he intends to alter this trend at Sega.

Speaking about gaming, Scarpone stated, “Today, it stands as a global phenomenon in entertainment, surpassing all other forms. It’s long overdue for the gaming industry to emulate the studio system from Hollywood, similar to how Disney revolutionized content creation.

Additionally, Scarpone pointed out that Shadow the Hedgehog playing a significant part in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic X Shadow Generations served as a model for the interconnected content that he encourages Sega to explore further.

According to Scarpone, there are activities happening across various platforms related to Shadow merchandise and Shadow character cameos. The goal is to make Shadow a timeless, standalone character, which is part of our long-term plans.

Scarpone added, ‘I believe Sega is poised for growth as our transformation into an entertainment company takes hold.’ Other gaming companies are also making this transition, some with varying levels of success, and Nintendo, being a significant influence in the Japanese game industry, is one example. However, I feel that we’re doing well and there are numerous chances for us to expand the perception of the Sega brand globally. That’s my goal.’
