Like Mario, Zelda Series Should See 2D And 3D Games Going Forward

As a dedicated Zelda fan with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can confidently say that the latest installment, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, has truly resonated with me. While some may argue over which genre – 3D or top-down – offers the best Zelda experience, I’m just thrilled that Nintendo continues to explore both worlds.

Regardless of personal preference, it can be debated if classic, linear The Legend of Zelda games or 3D open-world adventures starring Link are superior. However, Nintendo appears content to keep producing titles across both styles within the franchise.

In a conversation with BBC, Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma shared insights about the future of the franchise following the launch of The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. He mentioned, “We’ll certainly continue creating dynamic 3D games like Tears of the Kingdom, but we also aspire to keep developing 2D top-down Zelda titles as well.

Through the insights gained from Echoes of Wisdom, Aonuma found himself at a pivotal moment, recognizing that there’s plenty of room for innovation within the top-down style Zelda games. Prior to this, he had wondered if such games could incorporate fresh elements. However, it became evident that they indeed can, as even in Echoes of Wisdom, Link’s sword was not the central focus, allowing Zelda to shine as the main character for the series (excluding any CDi games).

As a passionate fan, I must say that the latest Switch exclusive, Echoes of Wisdom, was packed with novel elements. For the very first time in the franchise, we have Tomomi Sano at the helm as our female director. What’s more, this game marks a significant departure for the mainline series, as Shigeru Miyamoto did not receive credit – quite an unusual shift!

If you didn’t know, Echoes of Wisdom can actually be beaten in under an hour, thanks to a glitch. For more, check out TopMob’s The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom review.
