Neon Sets December Release for Speculative Sci-Fi Doc ‘2073’ – Film News in Brief

As a movie lover who has witnessed the evolution of cinema over several decades, I must say that the trailer for “2073” has truly piqued my interest. The blend of speculative sci-fi and documentary style, coupled with the hauntingly beautiful visuals and poignant narrative, promises a cinematic experience that is both thought-provoking and visceral.

Neon has scheduled a December 27th release and unveiled the trailer for Asif Kapadia’s (“Amy”) film titled “2073,” which is a thought-provoking sci-fi documentary offering a glimpse into a possible grim future that we might face 49 years from now.

According to the official description, the movie unfolds in the year 2073, where the darkest apprehensions of contemporary life have become a grim reality. Swarming surveillance drones paint the skies with burnt orange hues, and heavily armed police patrol the ravaged streets. Beneath this surface lies a population clinging to memories of a once-free and optimistic world. In a unique blend of futuristic science fiction and factual speculation, Kapadia guides us into a future that eerily echoes the disturbing trends of our current era. Actress Samantha Morton, known for “In America,” portrays a survivor haunted by chilling flashbacks of the past—a past chillingly similar to our present, depicted through contemporary footage interweaving today’s crises in authoritarianism, unchecked tech giants, inequality, and global warming. ‘2073’ offers a stark, compelling vision of a dystopian future that may very well be our own.

Naomi Ackie, known for “Blink Twice,” co-stars in a movie penned by Kapadia and Tony Grisoni. The film draws inspiration from Chris Marker’s groundbreaking sci-fi work, “La Jetée.” It tells the story of a time traveler trying to rewrite history to improve his bleak present.

Kapadia and George Chignell are the producers at Lafcadia Productions, while Tom Quinn and Dan O’Meara from Neon, Emily Thomas, Dana O’Keefe, Emily Selinger, Ollie Madden, Farhana Bhula, and Nicole Stott of Concordia Studio, Chris King, Eric Sloss, and John Sloss serve as executive producers. Notably, Double Agent, Neon, and Film4 were the executive producers and co-financiers of this film. Here’s a sneak peek at the trailer below.
