Dwayne Johnson Says Controversy Over Set Behavior Is ‘Bulls—‘ but Admits to Peeing in Bottles and Being Late to Filming: ‘Yeah, That Happens’

As a seasoned movie-goer with decades of industry insights under my belt, I must say that this Dwayne Johnson controversy has certainly stirred up quite a storm in Tinseltown! The tales of tardiness and water bottles might raise some eyebrows, but let’s take a step back and consider the man’s schedule. With blockbuster films, family life, and countless other commitments, it’s no surprise that the clock ticks differently for some stars.

In an interview for GQ magazine’s latest issue, Dwayne Johnson openly acknowledged occasional lateness on set and admitted to using water bottles as makeshift urinals during filming, a topic that sparked online discussions earlier this year following The Wrap’s report. This article suggested that Johnson’s tardiness and other actions increased the budget of his upcoming Christmas movie “Red One” significantly, with sources stating that delays could amount to as much as eight hours per day and potentially drove the production cost up to a substantial $250 million.

Johnson acknowledged it, but he clarified it wasn’t that extreme. He found it astonishing, even absurd, that the quantity mentioned was so excessive.

According to The Wrap, it’s been reported that during filming, Johnson often chose to use water bottles instead of going to public restrooms when he wasn’t by his trailer. He even confessed to GQ magazine: “Yes, that happens…I’ve told the truth about this a thousand times: ‘Come and ask me, and I’ll give you an honest answer.’

Despite occasional tardiness and using bottles instead of a restroom, Johnson dismissed the uproar generated by the report as “nonsense.” Director Jake Kasdan and co-star Chris Evans seem to concur with this stance, offering support for the actor in response.

[Dwayne] has never taken a day off from work,” Kasdan shared with GQ. “He’s a busy man, and he may arrive late occasionally, but that’s just how Hollywood works – it’s the same for everyone. Over three major films I’ve worked with him, I’ve never witnessed anything but kindness towards every individual on the set.

Evans expressed a similar thought: “Regarding the person I observed, compared to some actors in other films who not only disregard others’ time and efforts, but are also inconsistent, I found Dwayne Johnson to be incredibly predictable, and we always knew what he was going to do.

Evans stated that Johnson often exercised in the morning before arriving at work, and this wasn’t a secret to the producers, director, or his team. In fact, they were all aware of it. So, it’s nothing unusual. There might be slight delays on some mornings, but these are planned ahead and accommodated within the schedules, ensuring that Johnson arrives at the right time as scheduled.

Evans downplayed the dispute surrounding Johnson’s actions on set by highlighting the excellent aspects of his behavior, such as the instance when Johnson generously handed out a total of $100,000 to different crew members on one particular day.

The prize pool had reached around $4,000 to $5,000 before someone drew a name, and according to Evans, just before the winner was announced, Dwayne asked, ‘What’s the current amount?’ Someone replied, ‘It’s four grand.’ To which Dwayne responded, ‘Let’s say it’s 20 instead.’ The excitement grew as the winner was revealed. Dwayne then suggested, ‘You know what? Should we do it again? How about 30 this time?’ The crowd went wild. Then he said, ‘You know what? Let’s try one more time,’ and this time the prize was $50. On one Friday alone, Dwayne is said to have given away nearly $100,000 in prizes.

On November 15, the movie titled “Red One” will be released in U.S. cinemas by Amazon MGM Studios. For a comprehensive read of Johnson’s feature, visit GQ’s official website.
