Viola Davis to Be Honored by Red Sea Film Festival as Lineup Is Unveiled, Including Johnny Depp’s ‘Modi’ and Robbie Williams Biopic ‘Better Man’

As an avid film enthusiast with a penchant for international cinema and a soft spot for stories that challenge societal norms, I am absolutely thrilled about this year’s Red Sea Film Festival lineup! The diversity in narratives, cultures, and perspectives is truly inspiring.

Viola Davis is set to receive an honor at the Red Sea Film Festival in Saudi Arabia. Not only that, but she will also conduct a workshop sharing insights about her successful acting career.

On a Monday, the festival, happening from December 6th to 14th along Jeddah’s eastern Red Sea coast, unveiled its principal roster for its fourth installment. This year’s event will kick off with the world debut of Egyptian director Karim Shenawy’s musical drama titled “The Tale of Daye’s Family.” The movie centers around an 11-year-old Nubian albino boy with a captivating voice who encounters challenges due to his distinctive appearance, as described in the synopsis.

At a recent press event, Shivani Pandya Malhotra, festival manager, expressed that this production serves as an ideal portrayal of where this region is moving towards and the current events transpiring here. She pointed out that the motivational film is a joint effort between Egypt and Saudi Arabia in its creation.

This year, the focus of The Red Sea Film Festival is on Saudi and regional cinema, while also recognizing Egyptian actress Mona Zaki. She stars in the Egyptian female empowerment thriller “Flight 404,” where her character’s hidden past reemerges as she prepares for a journey to Mecca.

The remaining films chosen for this year are primarily first-time showings, with around half originating from various parts of the globe, representing approximately 80 different nations.

Here’s one way to rephrase it:

The 16-film competition includes various notable entries, such as “Inshallah a Boy,” a dark drama from Jordanian debutant Amjad Al Rasheed that explores ancient patriarchal inheritance laws, and “Seeking Haven for Mr. Rambo,” the first feature by Egypt’s Khaled Mansour focusing on a young man facing his fears.

The final movie for the night is “Better Man,” directed by Michael Gracey, featuring the life story of British pop sensation Robbie Williams. This film is scheduled to be shown as a special gala presentation. However, it’s still uncertain if Robbie Williams himself will be in attendance at the event.

Another film premiering at the Red Sea Festival, similar to its counterpart in the Red Sea, is “Modi – Three Days on the Edge of Madness,” a biopic about the Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani, starring Johnny Depp. This production partially receives funding from the Red Sea Foundation, and last year, Depp himself was present at the festival.

This year, it’s been confirmed that the Red Sea Fest will be returning to its roots, shifting from the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Jeddah, to the culturally significant area of Al-Balad, a designated UNESCO World Heritage site.
