As a cinephile with a deep appreciation for true crime narratives, I must admit that the Amanda Knox series on Hulu is stirring quite the pot, even more so in the heart of Perugia where this tragic event unfolded nearly two decades ago. The town’s residents, still grappling with the loss of Meredith Kercher, are understandably upset by the filming, and their banners demanding “Respect for Meredith” speak volumes about the raw emotions that remain unresolved.
The Hulu production titled “Amanda Knox,” overseen by Amanda Knox herself, is stirring controversy in the Italian town of Perugia, a place where the series has been filmed 17 years following the tragic murder of Meredith Kercher.
Last week’s visit by the cast and crew of the show to the university town where Meredith, Knox’s British roommate who died on Nov 2, 2007, has stirred up local residents who have hung banners saying “Respect for Meredith.” This has caused a commotion that led Mayor Vittoria Ferdinandi to publish an apology letter in the city newspapers.
The Perugia mayor explained in a letter that while we technically had the option to refuse filming of five scenes here in Perugia, it was possible those scenes could have been shot in another town within our region instead.
She added: “We thought filming these scenes here would give us a higher level of assurance and control, since – as per our conditions – we can monitor and approve each scene ourselves.
Hulu did not immediately respond to EbMaster‘s request for comment.
The eight-part miniseries, named “Blue Moon,” is said to be inspired by real events detailing the unfortunate miscarriage of justice where Amanda Knox was falsely accused of murdering her roommate, Meredith Kercher.
Back in the spotlight of global headlines, I, as a movie buff, found myself deeply engrossed in the intriguing story of Meredith Kercher’s tragic death. Initially, my heart went out to Knox and her then partner, Raffaele Sollecito, who were both convicted for the murder. However, five years later, Italy’s supreme court overturned their conviction in 2015. As the story unfolded, Rudy Guede was ultimately found guilty of the heinous crime and received a sentence of 16 years imprisonment. Fast forward to November 2021, Guede was released from prison, leaving us all with a sense of closure, though tinged with a lingering uncertainty.
However, doubts about Knox’s role in the murder linger in Italy and with Kercher’s family.
Previously mentioned, the Amanda Knox series on Hulu casts Grace Van Patten (“Tell Me Lies”) as the main character, with Giuseppe De Domenico (“ZeroZeroZero,” “Bang Bang Baby”) portraying Sollecito.
K.J. Steinberg takes on the role of the series’ originator. Among the executive producers are Steinberg, Knox along with her spouse Chris Robinson from Knox Robinson Productions, Warren Littlefield, Lisa Harrison, Kathy Ciric, Ann Johnson, and Graham Littlefield under The Littlefield Company, as well as Monica Lewinsky through her Alt Ending Productions label. 20th Television is the production company.
