Yellowstone: How did Season 5 Part 1 end? Mid-season finale recap

As a dedicated fan of the Yellowstone series, I can’t help but feel like I’ve been through a tumultuous Montana winter myself after the mid-season finale. The tension between the Dutton family members is palpable, and the betrayal by Jamie feels like a gut punch.

As we eagerly count down the remaining hours until Part 2 of Yellowstone Season 5 unveils more intrigue from the Dutton family’s complex and ruthless world, now is a great moment to refresh our memories about how things ended in Part 1.

For nearly two years now, viewers haven’t seen Yellowstone on their screens, leaving them dangling at a record-breaking cliffhanger. The specter of death hovered, and a significant portion of the ranch was partitioned with the intention of preserving the cattle herd.

Indeed, quite a bit has transpired since Season 5 Part 1 was first broadcast. Notably, Kevin Costner is no longer part of the series, and the initial plan for a multi-part finale has been condensed into just six episodes.

Finally! The long wait is finally over. But hold up there, cowboy, before you kick back and relax for the evening, let’s run through all the chaos that unfolded in Yellowstone Season 5 Episode 8 – yup, you guessed it, the mid-season finale. (Beware: spoilers ahead!)

Yellowstone Season 5 Episode 8 recap

John asks Monica for a favor

The mid-season finale kicked off with John and Monica airing out their grievances. If he’s going to run the state and keep the ranch afloat, he needs Kayce at Yellowstone while he’s in Helena.

To accomplish this task, he requests Monica personally if she, along with Kayce and Tate, would consider returning to live on the property, in a house situated close to the Reservation boundary. In the past, Monica has shown resistance to being around the ranch’s violent nature. However, given all that she has experienced recently, she consents to this proposal.

She even goes so far as to tell John, “That’s all you had to do. Ask.”

It seems clear that Kayce is set to take over management of the ranch, given that ownership will eventually pass to his son Tate. This appears logical since there’s much for the young man to grasp about maintaining such a property effectively.

Following a discussion with Kayce on the same topic, John astonished everyone by embracing his son (I hadn’t realized he was capable of it).

Jamie betrays the family (again)

With Sarah whispering words of power and vengeance into his ear, Jamie has all the necessary elements to take a public stand against his adopted father. In a gathering meeting, Jamie initiates a call for John’s impeachment, as his personal interests have allegedly cost Montana billions in tax income and tourism revenue.

Indeed, it appears unfavorable. The vote resulted in 67-33 in support of impeachment, marking the first time Montana will witness an impeachment trial. Swiftly, both Beth and John (presently at a rally on the Reservation in alliance with Thomas Rainwater) learn about this development without delay.

Jamies actions against his family are not new, but this latest act is undoubtedly his greatest betrayal yet. Unsurprisingly, the young Dutton feels quite proud of himself, planning to seize the opportunity and potentially take over as Governor during an emergency vote when John steps down.

The Cowboys ship out

At the ranch, Rip, Jake, Teeter, Ryan, and Walker are all bidding their farewells. Due to a disease outbreak within their herd, the Dutton’s cattle can’t endure Montana’s severe winter. Instead, John has decided to rent land in Texas for their livestock to reside there instead.

one will remain at the ranch while the other will travel southward. Farewells are heartfelt, with Teeter expressing her love for Colby and Ryan bidding adieu to his new country singer girlfriend Abby.

Beth and Jamie duke it out

Following a challenging day filled with actions that tarnished the Dutton family reputation, Jamie found himself comfortably resting in bed with Sarah. However, their peaceful nighttime rendezvous was abruptly disrupted when Beth forcefully broke into Jamie’s house, charging inside brandishing a brick.

Jamie dashes down the stairs and confronts Beth, leading to a physical altercation between them. In the scuffle, Beth strikes Jamie with a brick on the head. Although he’s shaken up, Jamie manages to recover. However, this incident triggers him, causing him to disclose details about the Train Station that Beth was unaware of – such as its purpose, the duration they’ve been utilizing it, and urging her to inquire from Rip about how many times he has gone there specifically to discard unwanted individuals.

Beth was amazed to discover the extent to which her family was committed to safeguarding the ranch. (In all honesty, she had no clue about their actions towards their adversaries.)

For the first time in their entire lives, Jamie has the upper hand.

Jamie vs Beth vs John

In a fit of anger, Beth marches towards the Governor’s mansion, finding John, Lynelle, and Clara there, engrossed in a news broadcast about the wolves that Ryan and Colby had supposedly killed on the Dutton land. When Beth and John are left to talk privately, she proposes that if all their adversaries are sent to a certain location, it should be where Jamie is sent – implying that harm should come to him (which essentially means she wants to cause him harm).

John’s response isn’t shown on-screen, but from his expression, he’s not against killing him.

Currently, Jamie is at home with Sarah attending to his head wound. Despite being highly agitated, he queries Sarah if she knows any experts (potentially hired guns) who could possibly assist him. Sarah acknowledges having contacts and suggests that the fate of Beth or John could be manipulated to appear as a car accident or heart attack.

So, the race is on. Who will win the killing game: Jamie or Beth? How is John’s Part 2 fate related to this two-way plot, and what happens when the ranch hands reach Texas?

The secrets hidden within Yellowstone’s fifth season continue to unravel as part 2 premieres tonight, airing at 8 PM Eastern Time, exclusively on the Paramount Network.
